So You Don't Like My Southern Hospitality

But More Importantly...

So You Don't Like My Southern Hospitality
Greer Norton

Recently there was an article written about people from the South and everything that we do wrong. Racial issues, fake attitudes, and gun laws were talked about in this article. I love the South. That's where I was born and raised. I use the word "y'all" in about every other sentences, and sweet tea is in my veins. I listen to country music, new and old, every time I'm driving somewhere. But what bothered me the most about this article was not what this person said about people from the South.

What bothered me the most was what was said about Christians.

This is a quote from the article:

"And Southern hospitality only applies to those who are Christian, right-winged, and straight. They'll be friendly and folksy until they figure out you're either a non-Christian, a leftist, or homosexual. Because, if you don’t fit into their stereotype, you aren’t deserving of kindness."

Please do not misunderstand what I am trying to say. I am not trying to defend how some Southern people act. I am not defending people who do not live out their faith, but I am speaking out for those who really want to glorify God. This quote says that "Southern hospitality ONLY applies to those who are Christian, right-winged, or straight." Really? How many of these type of people have you come in contact with? Honestly, if the Christians this person describes are really acting this way it makes me wonder if they really are Christians. That is not my place to judge and it is not your place either. By grouping Christians into the terrible things written in this post YOU are stereotyping them.

I do know some people who act fake, but I know some Christians who truly love the Lord. Maybe instead of going off on a rant a better thing to do is to look at the fruit in that person's life. Are they truly following the Lord and doing what they believe? That is something that they have to deal with in their own life and heart.

As for the person who wrote this, I am sorry that you have a misconception about Christians. I am sorry that you do not know that there are some great people who live in the South, just like everywhere else. Please do not stereotype anymore because that is really not fair to any of us, now is it? I can only speak for myself, but I will try to do the same, and truly live out my faith.

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Luke 6:37-38

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
