Why Snow Days Are The Best And The Worst

Why Snow Days Are The Best And The Worst

With the first snowfall of the year in Michigan happening over the weekend, there was a ton of excitement (and groans) from everyone across the state. Some people hate the snow, some people love it. With the heavy snowfall that is bound to make its way through Michigan in the near future that means one important thing to anyone who is in school: snow days. There are pros and cons to snow days and they really aren't hard to come up with. Snow days consist of fun, but also some ultimate laziness. Here are why snow days are the absolute best and the absolute worst at the same time.

BEST

I love snow. It's pretty, it's fluffy, and it's fun. When there's a snow day, there is no doubt that you'll find me outside in the snow for at least a little while. Just being able to watch the snow fall is a beautiful sight in of itself. If you're brave enough to be outside in the cold for an extended period of time, you can even enjoy a snowball fight with friends, go sledding, or build a snowman. Any of this stuff is fun no matter old you are.

WORST

Just because there's a snow day, doesn't mean that everything else just stops in the world. There is still work that needs to be done and important things that must take priority above just laying around. Snow days, without a doubt, promote laziness. If you don't have to go to school, your mind automatically turns off for the rest of the day. All you want to do is sit around and watch Netflix or lie in your bed all day and read a good book in the warmth of your room. While we wish every snowy could be like this, it cannot obviously happen without sacrificing some important work that probably needs to be done.

BEST

For exactly the same reason, you get to sit around and do nothing all day if you allow yourself. You can take a break from life and just relax for hours on end without feeling bad about it. Wrap yourself up in your warmest blanket, make some hot cocoa, and just sit around in the warmth of your own room and relax.

WORST

While forgetting about the rest of the world isn't always possible. If you still work while you're in school, just because there's a snow day doesn't always mean work is cancelled. So even though your classes for the day aren't going to happen, you still have to drag your lazy self out of bed to go to work. Good thing you're making money, though, otherwise if would for sure not be worth it.

Snow days are great and awful. Even though we should all be getting some work done on those days, we can't help but want to be lazy. If you're lucky enough, you'll be able to take advantage of the warmth inside and the day off. But some won't be as lucky and will be enjoying the snow day from work or the library.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
