Music is a globally unifying human experience.
Global unification is an aspect of music that has gone by the wayside in modern culture. Thankfully, Snarky Puppy is a milestone achievement in music for their unclassifiable style and global platform.
If you haven’t heard of them, they're a two-time Grammy award-winning jazz-fusion band based out of Brooklyn, NY. They fuse everything from jazz to pop, rock, gospel, R&B, classical and hip hop and out comes a beautiful melodic and chordal kaleidoscope.
The leader of the band, Michael League, characterizes their music as “music for the brain and booty.” Their music is jazzy, complex, creative and stimulates your brain. But you can also dance to it.League writes songs with such strong melodies that in the midst of all of the improvisation, you can still sing the melody. Their melodies are what makes them stand out today. In a musical culture of divide between the pop world and the classical/jazz world, Snarky Puppy finds a way to bridge the gap by making this complex music accessible.
“Thing of Gold,” one of their more popular songs, has the most simple and catchy melodies that the listeners find themselves singing along through all of the solos and key changes. A phenomenal achievement.
Another amazing thing about these guys is their approach to recording. Their recordings are all done in one room together at the same time with no overdubs. They're so in tune with each other and so locked together that now they even film and record their albums with a small live audience in the studio.Their instrumentation includes three guitars, three keyboards, two trumpets, a sax, bass, percussion and drums.
With all of this said, and tying back to the topic of global unification, Snarky Puppy is a pioneer in bringing music from all cultures and countries together in the same room. Their line of "Family Dinner" albums invites musicians from all over the world to come and make music together. Artists from the United States, England, Greece, Sweden, Mali, Peru and others get in a room with the band and either reinterpret a song of theirs, or write some new banging tunes. It’s an awesome way to bring people together and bring exposure to all different types of music.
The band’s first Grammy was awarded to the song “Something” featuring Lalah Hathaway from "Family Dinner, Volume 1."
The band also put out an album last year called "Sylva" with the Netherlandish orchestra Metropole Orkest and won the 2016 Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.
We have a lot to learn about how to infuse cultures, and how to continue to progress musically. So, check out their music! You won’t be disappointed.
