You know that feeling when you receive a letter in the mail from a friend? I bet it is pure joy.
This semester, I have felt a little down and I am just not feeling very motivated. But on the days I am feeling low, I know there is something I can do that will make me feel better. That is writing a letter. Or as I like to call it; sending snail mail!
Why do I call it snail mail, you ask? Well, in this day and age we have numerous ways of communication. Phone calls, text messages, FaceTime, Skype and e-mail are just a few examples. But each one of these examples is quick. The notion of completely writing, addressing, stamping and mailing a letter takes time. It is snail-like. Therefore, myself and many others seem to refer writing and mailing a letter to a friend as "sending snail mail."
So, why snail mail? Why take the time to sit down and write something? Why take the time to go to the post office and purchase stamps for the envelope? Well, let me just say that the person who receives the piece of mail will greatly appreciate it. Think back to what I said earlier. When you receive a letter, you feel joy. Why not create that joy for someone else? Creating joy brings joy. Having a tangible piece of writing is incredibly more satisfying than seeing words on a screen. So while you are at it, do not type out your letter, handwrite your letter.
In these bleak winter months, find warmth by giving. Giving a few moments of your time to make someone's day. It is the little things that count.
Remember, snail mail never fails!
