On October 1 the United States of America witnessed the most deadly mass shooting ever, with 59 dead and hundreds injured. They were attending a country music festival in Las Vegas.
I honestly have no words to describe what I am feeling right now. The closest I can come up with is, distraught and angry. Distraught because there are so many dead and so many injured and angry because I know exactly how this will play out.
That was a part of the reason when my heart dropped when I heard the news. I knew exactly what the reaction would be.
"Sometimes these things happen." and "Now is not the time to talk about gun legislation."
These empty answers spit in the face of the victims and families affected by gun violence.
Yes, sometimes these things do happen but there are actual ways to go about stopping these from happening ago.
When is a good time to talk about gun legislation? When there's a large enough break between mass shooting to let these wounds heal. Because if that's what we're waiting for, I guess we all will be waiting for a while.
And those politicians who vote against comprehensive gun control laws and tell us to calm down because sometimes tragedies happen, I have a message for you.
You will go down in history as those who did nothing. Those who looked at the issue of gun control and when pressured folded. Those who were given options and avenues that would have ended in people living out their lives instead of being gunned down. History will remember you all as the ones who decided re-election was more important than someone's life. History will remember you as the ones who stood by the side and watched these tragedies play out. You will be remembered as those who took bribes and traded money for peoples lives.
Maybe you think I'm being too harsh, maybe you think I'm taking this too far. But people are dead and people have died. People who could do something about this, talk about instances like these as though they are natural disasters. As though there is nothing anyone can do to stop it. All the while, so many gun control bills have come to the floor only to go nowhere.
The answer is not taking all the guns away from all the people, I don't believe that would be able to happen in America overnight, not at the rate we're going. And I don't think that needs to happen anyway. But taking a second look at past attempts like universal background checks or reinstating the assault weapons ban or not allowing the mentally ill from buying guns might be a good place to start. Or present another solution.
Some could argue that even if any one of these bills passed the problem wouldn't be solved immediately. Unfortunately, they might be right, but if just one mass shooting was stopped wouldn't that be worth it? I refuse to believe that our only option is to sit back and let more people die.
This is the United States of America and we can not guarantee our citizens safety. How is this ok?
I have so much respect for any first responders and anyone who gave blood and the nurses and doctors working hard in Las Vegas, maybe even as you read this, to save the lives of these victims. If our politicians could be as honorable as them maybe this wouldn't be a problem.
Of course, my thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and families of this latest tragedy. But what good do my thoughts and prays do for the next group of victims and the next group of families?
Let's not pretend this was unavoidable. Let's not pretend there aren't solutions. Let's not pretend we know exactly who is allowing these tragedies happen.
