SMU 101: Welcome To The Hilltop, Class Of 2020
Southern Methodist University

If you are reading this, you may be entering your freshman year at SMU. Congrats, and welcome to the greatest (and most beautiful) school in the nation! With orientation and the first day of classes quickly approaching, you must be excited, nervous and a little scared to start this next chapter of your life at SMU. Here are a few tips to help make your first few weeks at SMU a little easier.

1. If you have a choice, always go to Umph.

4 words. All. Day. Omelet. Bar. Umph also has a beautiful dessert section with a bell that rings every few minutes to let patrons know that fresh, hot cookies have been prepared. On your way in you’ll also get daily motivation and a hug by the ID swiper, Derrick.

2. A champagne brunch before a Boulevard does not serve food.

This is VERY important. Do not show up on an empty stomach. You will have many regrets.

3. Make the most of Mustang Corral

Seemingly endless hours of icebreakers, name games and discussions may sound like torture, but many people end up making some of their best friends at Corral. Be social and say hi to the person sitting next to you; they could become a lifelong friend.

4. If you don’t want to workout in front of the whole school, go upstairs at Dedman.

Do you hate working out in front of groups of fraternity men bench-pressing, random professors and any acquaintances? If your answer is yes, then workout upstairs. There is less equipment, but that means less people.

5. There are libraries besides Fondren.

Fondren is great for late-night studying (especially now that there is a Starbucks), but it can get over-crowded very quickly. SMU has so many other libraries on campus; so don’t be afraid to study at one of them. A couple of my favorites are Hamon Library in Meadows, Bridwell Library by Perkins and the business school library.

6. Buy a step stool for your dorm.

The standard bed height at SMU is at a very awkward height. It is too low to have a ladder, but too high to get into your bed easily (especially if you’re shorter like me). Instead of struggling trying to literally jump into your bed, just go to Target and buy a simple step stool.

SMU is a special place. It is truly one of the best communities I have ever been a part of. Enjoy every second you have here; four years go by quickly!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
