Smartphone Photography: Beauty Of The Wang Center Garden

Unedited, natural nature.

Who said Stony Brook's campus isn't beautiful? The area outside the Wang Center is a popular place for students to take photos in and it's no surprise why. The garden area is absolutely beautiful and can be a perfect opportunity for new photographers to dip their toes into the ocean of visual art—or at least dip their toes in the Wang water fountain to get a good shot.

If you're a beginner and want some inspiration for pictures, take a look. Here are 10 unedited photos that I took around the garden with my iPhone!

1. Prison strike

A picture can be manipulative. I swear, Wang Center is not a prison.

2. Sorry, random girl

Putting people in your photos makes the picture more interesting and gives it that sweet moment in time feel. I'm sorry to all of the people that I've taken pictures of from the back. The picture was too aesthetic to pass up.

3. Creeping yellow flower

If you get really close to things that you're taking pictures of, you start to see what you might've missed with a passing glance. The detail in the middle of the flower is beautiful and I love how the plants are poking through the bench. It feels like the plants are taking over.

4. Butterflies

Get close! It'd be tough to capture the details of a butterfly with just your eyes since the butterfly is always moving. Use a camera instead.

5. My hands were a little too close while taking this photo

BEES. I'm wildly afraid of most bugs and insects, especially if they or their relatives can hurt people with their stingers. Even though these bees were probably harmless, there's still a lesson to be learned. Face your fears and take risks when taking photos.

6. Stones

I like pictures where you can't tell if they are from Stony Brook. This picture could've been from anywhere. The next picture will make it pretty obvious, though.

7. The endless fountain

Pay attention to your angles, kids. This angle makes the rocks looks like they could even expand more beyond the actual size of the fountain.

8. Nature vs. modernity

A pink pop of color next to the monochrome Wang... tower? Satellite? I don't really know what that thing is.

9. A photo that looks better upside down

If you flip this around, it looks like the Wang satellite tower thing is orbiting over the Earth. The more you know.

10. Flowers exiting Wang

Sometimes you miss things when your mind is so clouded by stress from classes. You might've missed these flowers that bloomed along the path to the Wang Center. This semester, keep your eyes peeled. Beauty is everywhere and all around Stony Brook University!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
