Slushie: A Short Story

The road was blocked off and all they could see was a broken cup, and what looked like to be a slushie.

Slushie: A Short Story

There it was, laying in the middle of the road. A horrified Madeliene and Olive stood there, looking at their love slipping away. The red substance leaking from the cracks from the fall. The gathering around the scene started to grow; mothers covering their kid’s eyes, and silence so thick you could cut it with a knife. All Madeline and Olive could do was stand there in complete and utter shock. It all happened in an instant, it was so fast that neither of them could comprehend what had just happened.

“Olive, what did you do to Carl?!” Madeliene yelled.

“It wasn’t my fault, he fell, and I couldn’t get him to him in time.” Olive replied with tears lining her eyes.

“PICK HIM UP!” she yelled.

“I can’t! He is gone Madeliene, I can’t help him.” She cried out and fell to her knees.

The police were soon called and the scene was taped off. The police had a procedure set up for this type of crisis. The sound of cameras flashing and gasps filled the area. They started taking eye-witness statements and collecting information. Olive and Madeline were separated for questioning purposes. They kept replaying the events leading up to accident. It was like any normal day. They just picked up Carl after class and were on their way back to campus. There Carl was, sitting in-between them, wind blowing through their hair; music blasting and the warm sun shining on their skins. Life was perfect in the moment and nothing could change that. The way the they were smiling was as if nothing else mattered, but those three in that moment.

“Excuse me, Madeliene?” the office called her out of her own thoughts. He needed to gather her statement of the accident.

She talked to them about the leading up to situation. Talking about the car ride back to campus, and how everything was okay for a short time. She talked about how they had been friends for years, and how it was never going to be the same.

“Can you give us any information about what happened?” they asked her.

“Well, we were walking back to my room with Carl. We were about to cross the street when Olive tripped, and the next thing I know he was gone. There wasn’t anything I could do; it was all just too fast. As soon as he hit the ground, I knew we lost him.” She choked on every word that came out of her mouth.

“Thank you Miss” they said and walked away.

She peered over at Olive, wondering if she was okay. They weren’t sure how they were going to get through this. Olive, however was still in total shock. She couldn’t believe that she was the one responsible for the death of Carl. How was she ever going to move on? The police then walked over to her and needed to question her.

“Can you tell us what happened?” the police asked.

“We were coming back from getting Carl. We were the crossing the street and I wasn’t really paying attention to where I was walking. Then all of a sudden Carl fell out of my hand. He hit the ground and there he was. His Styrofoam casing was busting open and he was gone. I can’t believe that he’s gone. It’s all my fault” she said.

She couldn’t believe what had happened and neither could Madeliene. The best slushie that they ever created was gone. Carl was laying in the street, with his plastic lid popped off and the contents falling out. The sweet icy sensation that everyone should have been a part of, gone.

Madeliene and Olive comforted each other as they stood and stared at carl, laying in the middle of the road. Then suddenly Olive ran up to the scene where Carl was, and tried to pick him up. She tried putting the contents back into the cup that was broken. The scene was not easy for Madeliene to watch, however there wasn’t anything they she could do.

“It’s going to be okay Carl; we will fix this.” Olive kept saying.

She kept trying to fix what had been done, but it was too late. Carl was gone, and Olive just couldn’t accept that. Madeliene then walked over and tried to pick her friend up. She tried to help make it better by asking her if she wanted to go get another slushie, and that it was what Carl would want.

‘You think that Carl could ever be replaced?!” she fired back at Madeline.

“I just thought that it would help make it easier on you, I know that there will never be a slushie as good as Carl, but I just thought” she said.

“Well you thought wrong” she said.

They couldn’t believe that Carl was gone and all they could think about was if all this actually happened.

“Could you actually imagine if that happened?” Olive said jokingly.

“I honestly couldn’t imagine losing my slushie, this is some good stuff.” Madeliene said walking across the street, slushie in hand.

All of a sudden they come to a scene; the road was blocked off and all they could see was a broken cup, and what looked like to be a slushie.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
