If you know me, then you might think I have my life together. Well honey, I was good at faking it until last semester. These tricks have helped me to (mostly) survive. Now, I want to bestow this saving grace onto you. Here are a few tips to get you into the swing of spring semester:
1. Subscribe to Thomas Frank
College Info Geek, or Thomas Frank, makes amazing content bi-weekly on how to survive college. He is now a full-time YouTuber who dedicates his life to making yours easier. From tips on how to save bank on college text books, how to be a better public speaker and advice on how to do everything without dying of exhaustion. He also wrote a book entitled "10 Steps to Earning Awesome Grades," which is free to subscribers. Also, he is a cutie.
2. Keep an electronic schedule and an old-fashioned planner.
If I write something down, I remember it. My phone sends me lovely little reminders, so I am never (well, almost) late. However, I am notoriously bad for not having either my planner or my phone with me, but usually not both. This way, I always have a copy of my daily schedule. I always have something to me, so I can schedule future meetings of coffee dates on the spot without having to move a lot of things around. Make sure you update them regularly so you don't miss a meeting because you forgot it interrupted with your usual Netflix marathon.
3. Do only what you want one morning/afternoon.
I am a big believer that we all need our breaks. I usually spend my Friday nights or Saturday morning wasting time. I'll rent a movie, try a new recipe, fail at contouring my face, hang out with the squad, binge "House of Cards," get adult drinks with said squad, crochet something weird, or even looking up supreme court cases (yes, I do that for fun). We all need a moment to regroup.4. Devote one day to work exclusively.
This means no Netflix, no goofing off, no being crazy. This is a day where you spend your time either working on homework, running errands, or planning for the future. If this was a habit I had started long ago I believe that I would be a much happier and successful person.
5. Have a no-excuses list.
This has helped me out for years. At the beginning of each week, make a list of things that you must get done without any excuses. It doesn't matter if there is another #snowmageddon2k16. You will accomplish your "no-excuse" list this week or you will have disappointed a pretty important person, yourself. Take responsibility.6. Exceed your previous capabilities.
I've been prouder of barely passing a test which I studied months for than I was for getting all As in classes that didn't challenge me. My parents taught me that success is knowing that you have exceeded your previous capabilities. If you are capable of passing, pass by working your hardest. If you always get straight A's without effort take this semester as an opportunity to push yourself into further greatness. Hard work is the key.
Go forth my child. Slay.
