Why "Free Ke$ha"?

Slavery is not dead. Here's why.

Why "Free Ke$ha"?

No, she is not locked up, so free her from what? The whole world protesting for Kesha’s freedom makes it sound like she is a slave. A slave to whom? Have her rights been taken away from her? Let’s take it back to the beginning. The widely famous American pop star, Kesha Rose Sebert, also known as Ke$ha, is a singer, songwriter and rapper. Fresh into the real world at 18 years old, she was lucky enough to sign on with a large producer and label company, Dr. Luke with Kemosabe Records. She signed a contract to work with this man, put in years of hard work and clearly trusted him, or so she thought. Their records hit the Billboard Hot 100s several times, with many hit albums over the years.

Now in 2016, Kesha is breaking her silence about being sexually, physically and emotionally abused by her producer Dr. Luke. She has filed a lawsuit against Dr. Luke with little to no evidence backing her claim. She has proof of developing an eating disorder and being admitted into a rehab center, which she claims was due to pressure from Dr. Luke to lose weight. She only asks to be freed from her contract with her abuser and be able to move on with her career. She was denied this. The judge ruled that a contract, bound by money and signatures, is more important than her safety and well-being.

Many people will try to turn this into a feminist issue, which is a legitimate concern. Although, this is not only about gender inequality, nor can any race or religious card be pulled in this case. This is strictly a prime example of how power and money overrules justice in our government today. Money is the root of all evil and continues to run the world, now more than it ever has.

This woman came forward, despite all of the fear she had of losing her career and even her life, and trusted our judicial system to take care of her. No matter how much evidence was found or not, if someone feels uncomfortable, they should not be forced to continue working beyond their will. She is a slave to money and the music industry. She was bought at 18 years old, abused for years and now denied her right to be freed from a dangerous situation. Slavery is not dead, people! It is 2016 and we are still being denied our rights, even in the precious “Land of the free and home of the brave”.

Brave is still true, though. I am proud to see millions of Kesha’s fans, fellow artists and other well known public figures standing behind her, protesting, supporting and understanding how huge of a problem this is. A woman is bound by contract to her abuser and because there is no proof, they do not even release her contract. She is not asking to prosecute him, which would be a totally different situation, she has clearly stated on the record that she only wants her freedom. Yet she is being accused of making false accusations to get more money.

Where is the justice? This is a stab to all Americans who may be bound by any contract. This says no matter how you are treated, if you do not have proof of harm, you are still in debt to whomever it may concern. This also leaves the impression that if you have money for court, lawyers, etc., you may treat people how ever you please and get away with it, as long as you leave no evidence. The judge won’t believe them anyway, right? I do not think we realize just how much the term “Free Kesha” might mean to us someday. Today, it may only mean we are supporting a celebrity who is being ignored and denied her freedom. Tomorrow the words “Free Ke$ha” could be a remembrance of how deep the “root of all evil” travels into our judicial system. So, "Free Ke$ha!" because she is a human being and has the right to choose her own safety over money.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
