Six Reasons Why I Love My Small Church

There were times that I didn't want to wake up to go to church but there was never a time I regretted going.

I used to think that the best churches were those with the most programs, latest technology, and largest congregation -- I was wrong. The best churches are actually the ones filled with Jesus-loving, unconditional love-showing, faith-filled disciples. I was raised in a small church like that, with people that would scream at the top of their lungs how much they loved Jesus, but I wouldn't have it any other way. There is not a time I have walked out of those two big, red doors that I do not feel empowered by the Holy Spirit, forgiven or loved. My small church has taught me more than any class ever could and for that I am eternally grateful.

Here are my top six reasons why I love my small church:

1. I know all the elders (and they know me).

I wasn't always a huge fan of being raised in a church with very few millennials but I have grown to love it. My elders' testimonies and witnesses are priceless, and they are devoted to shepherding the congregation. I have learned so much from them and I am incredibly thankful for all that they have taught me.

2. When I am not there, people miss me.

When I am unable to attend church or I am away at school, I know that I am missed. It's comforting knowing your congregation is genuinely concerned about you.

3. I am loved -- unconditionally and openly.

When you walk through those big, red doors there is no question whether you are loved or not-- you are. You are welcomed with open arms. The congregation is not there to judge you of your sins but rather to accept you as their brother/sister in Christ. My church family is always there to support the happy and difficult times in my life. There is not a place in the world that you will ever feel more loved than in a quaint church.

4. When the Lord's Supper is given it's like a family meal.

The breaking of the bread and the wine is incredibly intimate just like a family meal. You are surrounded by people that love you unconditionally and are not there to judge your sins but rather support you in your choice of asking for forgiveness.

5. Our mission statement is a true representation of my church.

Just like my church's mission statement says: we are centered in Jesus Christ, we are empowered by the Holy Spirit, healing does take place in our presence, lives have undoubtedly been changed and true disciples have been made.

6. My church isn't perfect.

We don't have to dress our 'Sunday best' to worship God, in fact if you want to wear a raccoon hat, we don't care. We don't have to sing on key and have perfect harmony and if you feel like you need to shout how much love you God right in the middle of the sermon you won't be stopped. As long as you are Jesus-loving fool you are welcomed.

Throughout my childhood I didn't appreciate my church enough or the people in it but as I continue to grow older I realize each Sunday just how special my little church really is. I am incredibly blessed to have such a loving church in my corner.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
