Seeking membership has always been a lifelong dream of mine. I am attracted to the service and sisterhood. It was not until I tried to recruit others to seek membership with me that I realized many people do not know the benefits of seeking membership in a sorority. Many people rely on hearsay which is not always the best information. So here's six reasons to join a sorority:
1. There are plenty of networking opportunities.
Making connections in college is important. After graduation, you will be looking for jobs, and the more people you know the better chance you have at finding one or, even better, getting one. Sororities provide networking opportunities. Most sororities hold conventions where members to mingle with old and new members. Because members come from diverse backgrounds, there is always someone you can make a good connection with and use as a reference in the future.
2. It helps promote sisterhood and friendships.
Sororities are a lifetime commitment. You will spend a lot of hours with your fellow members doing service and participate in social events. That time together will initiate relationships. And who knows? You may meet your best friend or find another!
3. There are social events.
When seeking membership, many people tend to leave this component out. Sororities are so much more than social events, but social events are needed. Social events are the events that help create the bond between the members of the sorority. Whether it is a crazy party or a simple girls' night, social events are very enjoyable, creates memories, and should not be shunned out. As long as the mission of the sorority is kept in mind, social events are not that bad.
4. Gives the opportunity to provide service to others.
One of the main components of sororities is service. Service is the action of helping or doing work for someone. Because of the big platform that sororities have the impact of their service events reach a big audience. Although the service events take a lot of work, the ultimate feeling of knowing you helped someone else is a great feeling. Most sororities do a wide range of service events, so you can find one you are passionate about and really make an impact.
5. The high standards challenge its members to be the best version of themselves and empower them.
As sororities work to help others, subconsciously sorority members are helping themselves. Sorority members are held to high expectations from academic achievement to personal value. Many sororities are strict on their expectations as well. You either get with it or get lost. But do not feel discouraged. No one is perfect. The great sororities empower and uplift each other as they progress forward. As long as the bond and self-determination is there, growth towards the best version of you will always occur.
6. Each sorority is so unique that potential members seeking membership can find one that fits them.
From the colors to the symbols and hand signs, each sorority is unique. So you have options in finding one that fits you best. Get out there and explore!
Yes, sororities cost a bit of money, but the ultimate experience is life changing and irreplaceable. If you have the opportunity to seek membership, I strongly suggest seeking it!
