Sister
/ sis-ter / n.
"creations of satan designed to search and destroy the older sibling."
That's the first definition of a sister given to you by the ever faithful Urban Dictionary. Scroll down a little bit and you get this little gem as well:
Slowly over the years, I have come to discover that both of those definitions are startlingly accurate. Both with my biological sister and also my sorority sisters, but this isn't about my biological sister, this is about those sisters that have made the past few years, my best ones yet.
People have always been perplexed as to how a girl can join a sorority full of girls whom she may only know a handful of and within a few hours of signing her bid she is so in love with all of them. Like they didn't just meet five minutes ago and she probably couldn't tell you anyone's name in the room other than her roomie who went to the same srat with her.
People are right to be perplexed, but in all honesty, that new girl doesn't know all of these new sisters of hers and odds are she will most definitely not know all of them well enough even within the next week to be genuine when she says that she loves all of her sisters dearly.
But that's where sisterhood comes into play. You just met these girls and have no idea who they are, but obviously there is something there because, uh hello, you joined the same sorority. It may have been for completely different reasons, but deep down you were both drawn inherently to the same sorority.
It may take weeks and it may take months, it even took me over a year to learn about some of my sisters. There are even some in my chapter right now that I am most definitely not close to and couldn't tell you the first fun fact about them. There are girls in my chapter that I became so close to so quickly that it seems like they've been there longer than anyone else in my life has been. There are girls who I am still becoming close to. There are girls that I do not get along with. There are girls of all shapes and sizes with different personalities all across the board. But that's what makes us sisters.
Eventually those girls will be your sister in every sense of the word, and I do mean every. You'll run around screaming death threats at the top of your lungs towards whichever sister ate your leftover dominoes out of the chapter room kitchen fridge, but you'll also stay up until the sun comes up before a final crying over a Netflix series with a sister that a month ago you didn't know existed.
We are a family. There are family members who you are close to and there are family members you don't normally run around with. A sisterhood is the same way. There are sisters who may seem as if they are always out to get you and there are sisters who you don't know how you'd get up in the morning without them, but at the end of the day they are all the ones that you can go to about anything and they will still call you "sister."
