No, she's not my mom, well sometimes she can be.

7 Things That Happen When Your Sister Is 14 Years Older
Katie Miller

Having a sister is such a blessing, but things are a little different when your sister is 14 years older than you. When she was 14, my sister got the news that after all those years of being an only child she would be getting a sibling... This prompted her to tell my mom she was moving out (thanks, Sis). The age gap between us allows for special albeit, interesting relationship. Here's what it's like to have an older sister.

1. You have someone to look up to.

My sister influenced me in so many ways. When I was younger, it was through the music she listened to, for example I knew every word to songs that most 4 year olds didn't. As we got older though, my sister has shown me how to be a good mom and how to make the best out of everything. She always tells me how much she looks up to me, that I think she forgets I look up to her too.

2. Being babysat takes on a new meaning.

My sister was the free babysitter for my parents, but that certainly didn't mean we sat around the house. One time she decided to bring me to a graveyard with her friends when I was three. Despite her best efforts to keep me quiet about the detours to grandma's house and our graveyard adventure, I always told on her... What can I say? I was three.

3. You get your own personal giver of advice.

Since my sister is 14 years older than me, she knows a little bit more about life than I do. I'm lucky to have her, because I have someone who has already experienced things I'm going through and she's always, well usually, willing to help.

4. You always have someone who sings your praise.

So maybe at first she wasn't too excited about me coming into the world, but my sister eventually warmed up to me. When your sibling is that much older, you really don't fight as much as other siblings do. If I can count on anyone besides my parents to support me, its her. She'll post random sappy facebook posts and she pushes me to do my best. She's like my own personal cheerleader.

5. It's almost like having an extra mom, but a cool one.

I mean my mom is great, but she's more the voice of reason, while my sister will let me get away with a little bit more. She let me have sleepovers at her house with my friends, she got involved with my birthday parties, and she may or may not have given me my first drink. She knows her limits, but she's definitely the "cool mom."

6. People constantly ask if I'm her daughter.

Speaking of her being "cool mom," people always ask if she actually is my mom. One time we were eating dinner together and overheard the couple at the table next to us trying to figure out how old she was when she had me. Honestly my sister doesn't look anywhere near old enough to have me as her kid, but it's still kinda funny to see people try and figure it out.

7. I have someone who will always love me.

Although my sister can be a wittle witch as I once called her, I know she will always love me. No matter if I told our parents about our detours or her tattoo, I know she's got my back. She's someone I can always trust and she always looks out for me.

A 14 year age gap between siblings may sound a little crazy, but I wouldn't want it any other way. From me telling you you couldn't leave the house to you crying and telling me I couldn't go to college, we've had some good times. I know you wanted me to write this article for like ever, but it's hard to put into words how much you mean to me. Thank you for everything you've done for me, I love you so much.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
