Do you know what the first week of August means?
Well, other than summer dwindling down (sad face), the first week of August is also National Organize Your Life Week. What? Yes, that’s what I thought when I saw this little fun fact on the television today while I was working out at the gym. It seems like there’s a special day for basically anything you can think of nowadays. We have National Watermelon Day, National Best Friend Day, National French Fry Day, National Donut Day; the list goes on and on and on. So I guess it’s not really that surprising that the first week of August also means that it’s National Organize Your Life Week, right?
Fellow college students can vouch for me when I say that our lives are not always neat and “organized.” As college students, we’re constantly busy, which unfortunately means that keeping organized usually isn’t a top priority. However, I thought it would be suiting to talk about some organizational ideas to help us all get back into the “school spirit” (Blah, I know); since it is National Organize Your Life Week and all.
#1. Keep Your Dorm Room/Apartment Clean
I know it’s easy to just throw things down and then forget about them in your room, but after a few weeks, that one shirt turns into a pile then that pile eventually turns into a mountain. Well, not really, but we all know what I’m talking about. With our stressful lives, we don’t have time to worry about the cleanliness of our rooms. And I promise you, your roommates don’t want to deal with it either. So do yourself and your roommate a favor and just keep it clean, people. For example, use little storage units that can fit under your bed.
#2. E-Mail
Keep your e-mail filtered. It may not seem like a big deal, but having a cluttered inbox can really prove to be a hassle. You could easily skip over an important e-mail because it’s hiding in between all of your junk mail. A solution could be to create a separate e-mail for your school related things.
#3. Backpack
It makes me cringe when I see other people stuffing papers into their backpack. I just want to walk over to them and clean up their stuff for them. It’s impossible to be organized with random papers from multiple classes just floating around in your bag. Use folders and binders for specific classes. It would be even better if you color coded your folders and notebooks for each class. That way there will be no mixing up papers and you’ll always know just where everything is.
#4. Single-Task
Often times, successfulness is intertwined with being able to multitask. I beg to differ.Take one assignment at a time. Focusing on only one task will in turn create higher quality work, every time. If you’re stumped on one assignment, take a break or start something else and then come back to it. Everyone needs to know that it’s OK to not be a multitasker.
#5. Get Rid of the Negativity
If something/someone is bothering you, get rid of it. Negativity will only bring you down. It’s best to deal with the issue head on and solve it before it becomes an even larger mess. Remember, optimism trumps pessimism 100% of the time. Stay positive, keep an open mind, and say good riddance to negative people.
That’s all for now. I hope these five things prove to be beneficial to you all in the upcoming semester. Good luck and happy simplifying!!!!
