What is the point of a promise ring? Isn’t that just supposed to be something that the kids do in high school? Does it have to be given to you from your boyfriend or girlfriend? What kind of promise involves a ring? These were the questions that would come to mind whenever the topic of promise rings come up. But now approaching what does a promise ring truly mean to people, I now have an open mindset to this simple object packed with purpose.
One definition of what a promise ring is includes, “A promise ring is a plain or stone set ring, given for one or more reason. It can symbolize the love and commitment within one-on-one relationships. It is sometimes worn as a pre-engagement ring.” Woah hold up! “pre-engagement” that is a lot of commitment for a ring! Ok, so a promise ring is actually a big deal. And one that shouldn’t be taken lightly, but is that the only commitment a promise ring holds?
As a 21-year-old woman who likes to think of herself as very independent, I found another definition of a promise ring that isn’t given from one person to another, but from one person to themselves. “It can be worn, to denote a promise from that person to themselves, for any one of a number of reasons. Perhaps a reward and reminder to give up smoking or to work towards a goal. Perhaps even weight loss…”
The part of the name "promise ring" that should stand out to you is the word promise. Rings can show status or be used as an accessory. A ring is something you take off while showering and putting on your makeup and then remember to put back on and go on with your day. That’s all a ring is. But a promise, an engagement, and a wedding ring are more than just status accessories. They hold a meaning that no one can see but you can feel.
There is no age limit to it, it’s not limited to only being between two people. The meaning behind a promise ring is simple, to make known to yourself that you’re making this choice to be committed to life decision that will impact you for the better.
