12 Signs You Live In A Gentrified Neighborhood And You Are Part Of The Problem

Gentrification is a contemporary aspect that is affecting major urban areas. It is the process of improving a housing district to appeal more towards the upper-middle-class residents by displacing the lower working-class residents. The process of gentrification is controversial whether people are for it or against it. Here are 12 signs you live in a gentrified neighborhood and why it's not always the best thing for its residents.

You have seen posters and have heard the phrase 'new and upcoming'

The first major symptom of gentrification is seeing signs that mention "new and upcoming." Other key words to look out for is "brand new," "luxury," and 'just steps away from...' These posters often describe all the attractions the city has to offer.

If you see painters making the neighborhood artsier it is a sure sign that gentrification has hit your neighborhood. If the paintings seem to be Instagram-worthy, then your area is gentrified.

Hipsters and young adults are the populations most likely attracted to gentrification. This means that the very young, families with kids, and the old may face displacement with newly recent college grads moving in.

With gentrification comes an increase in people who love to stay fit. The people who are in a gentrifying neighborhood will see more joggers come out and do their morning or late-night run since the neighborhood is safer.

The rent prices have increased dramatically

With all the amenities that come with a gentrified neighborhood, higher rent prices are imminent. With the hike in rent, more poor residents who are no longer able to afford to live in the area will move.

This is one aspect that will make neighborhoods gentrified. Using brighter, flashier lights is one thing businesses will have to do to attract new customers.

Realtors always promote new apartments or houses with 'natural lighting

With new housing projects come new high-rises and condos with an ample amount of windows. All these windows will come with more natural light, and realtors will take the chance to promote new buildings with natural lighting.

Coffee shops and cafes become plentiful

Coffee shops, whether family-owned or big companies, will increase. If every two or three city blocks you see a coffee shop, it's a sure sign that gentrification has hit your community.

Gelato is a fancy word, and the presence of gelato ice cream will attract wealthier residents who will pay the extra price for this sweet treat.

Bikers, dog walkers, joggers, and just people walking around will increase with the added bike trails and running trails. Many people will own a bike or will be seen taking a nice jog.

Police are seen patrolling the streets more

With more police comes more safety, and residents will feel safer to walk around the neighborhood.

The neighborhood would honestly be a good place to spend a Friday night

With all the new amenities and attractions, residents will spend more weekend nights and days in your neighborhood, as opposed to going elsewhere. You'll see people enjoying the attractions that your community now offers.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
