Winter is approaching, and that means thousands of high school seniors everywhere will be receiving stuffed envelopes full of acceptance letters from colleges. It seems like only yesterday that I received my acceptance letter from Christopher Newport University. I was so excited because it was my first choice and the only school that I applied to for early decision. I knew from the moment I stepped on campus that this school was the place I was supposed to be at. If you're contemplating coming to CNU, here are 11 reasons why it may not be the place for you.
1. If you don't like columns.

We have got plenty of columns to spare here. We just embrace it.
2. If you don't like people holding doors open for you.

Yes, it is true. Most people will hold the door open for you even if you are all the way across campus (which is not that far considering how small it is). For us Captains, it is often a culture shock when we leave campus and no one holds doors for each other or thanks us when we hold the door open for them. CNU has a very unique community.
3. If you don't like getting to know your professors.

At most colleges, students are lost among the many faces in the classroom. However, at CNU, we have small class sizes, so your professors actually get to know you by name. Whether that is a good thing or not is up to you.
4. If you don't like brand new academic buildings and residence halls.

Even though the school is 55 years old, pretty much all of our academic buildings and residence halls are less than 15 years old, because the school has rebuilt basically everything. Everything still smells new. It's great.
5. If you don't have any school spirit.

We love our school. What can we say? Our clock tower even plays the fight song at noon every day. You can't get any more spirited than that!
6. If you don't have any appreciation for marching band.

Ask anyone on campus -- our marching band is like no other. They are pretty awesome.
7. If you can't follow an honor code.

We have an honor code here. I know that my fellow Captains have my back and I have their's. I trust that I can get out of my seat at the library to go to the bathroom and my stuff will still be there when I get back.
8. If you get tired of rainy weather quickly.

It rains. A lot. Invest in a good umbrella, rain jacket, and rain boots and you're all set. If you are basic, Bean Boots are commonly seen around campus. When it rains, it pours.
9. If you want a stereotypical Greek life experience.

Somehow Greek life at CNU just feels different. When my chapter of Delta Gamma was founded last year, all of the other Greek organizations came out and supported us on our bid day. Instead of running home to initiated sisters, we ran home to the Greek community.
10. If you hate beautiful sunsets.

Okay fine, you can see a beautiful sunset anywhere, but it is even more beautiful behind our immaculate buildings or even along the James River. Maybe I am biased, but we definitely have the best sunsets around.
11. If you don't like feeling like you are part of a community.

Because we are a small school, you will see familiar faces all of the time walking around campus. It always makes my day better to have so many people say "hello" to me. Also, all of the different student organizations help with freshman move-in so that the new students don't have to lift a finger. We help each other out.
CNU is a special place.
