I thought you were annoying, but I miss you.

An Open Letter To My Younger Brothers

Dear Younger Brothers,

It’s been a little over two months since I have last seen you two, and it’s been interesting. I no longer wake up to the sound of violent video games or to the constant bounce and swoosh of a basketball. I no longer wake up to the soft knock on my door, or the pounding that sounds like it’s going to make a fist sized hole in the wood. The smell of donuts, cinnamon, rolls, and Starbuck’s Caramel Apple Spice that you guys leave on my bedside table no longer make my stomach growl in the morning.

I miss when you guys would toilet paper my room as a joke after I came home from a long tournament. I miss it when you would pretend to listen to my rants when in reality all of your attention was focused on the television and the little voices in the headphones. I miss our little adventures of chasing the dogs when they got out or when we would go out to the movies. Our paddle boarding competitions were the best, especially when the youngest of our dogs decided to join in and bark at the water. I even miss arguing with each other about who would do the dishes after dinner or who’s turn it was to walk the dogs around the island. It’s the little things I miss.

So here I am, writing to you both because apparently it is another way I can try to communicate with you. Or at least try to communicate with one of you, and you know which one I am talking to.

The younger of you two always tries to try and talk to me. I get calls from you when I’m in class, and we try to have nightly FaceTime appointments. You constantly ask me questions about classes, life in Boston, my friends, and for some reason want to know if there are any boys in my life. You fulfill my wishes by taking pictures and videos of our dogs, and you endure my attempting to talk to them instead of to you. You give me advice, like what I need to do during a hurricane or a thunderstorm (stay away from windows, don’t go outside, etc.) instead of worrying about the Californian earthquakes. I expect to read all of your stories at some point, and I am incredibly happy that you like writing as much as I do. Mom has told me that you constantly ask about me and what I’m up to in college. I miss you too.

Now for the middle brother. I miss going to your football games, and our occasional shopping expenditures. I miss our scheming about different things, and watching each other’s backs when we were doing something we weren’t supposed to be doing. I didn’t like the overprotectiveness at first, but now I really miss it. Your sassiness always made me laugh, and sometimes we had deep conversations. They happened rarely, but I liked having them a lot. I miss teasing you about your girlfriends…well…I can still do that, but it’s a lot more fun when it happens in person. I can’t tell you how many times I have taken a picture of my outfits to send to you to get your thoughts on them, but then I remember the time difference and that you are probably asleep. Mom says you don’t talk about me or ask about me, but that you have taken over my room. The only inkling I have that you miss me is the fact that you have not moved any of my stuff in my, and you still sleep in my bed sheets. You haven’t moved any of your things into my room. I know you told me it was because you were lazy, but I know the truth. Miss you too, baby brother.

If it is not obvious, I miss you guys a lot. I can’t wait to see you in two weeks!

Love,

Your Older Sister

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
