Sometimes all the new year really brings, in addition to soon to be broken resolutions, are painstakingly long hiatuses. A few examples: "Marvel's Agents of Shield," "Once Upon a Time," "Castle," "How To Get Away With Murder" (again, you guys, once is an accident, twice is a pattern), "Scandal" (Fitz is a douche-monkey, Olivia).
But fear not, because for every drawn-out hiatus on television there are replacements, and for every replacement that just isn't your thing, there is an awesome series on Netflix you've never had the pleasure of indulging in.
1. "Shadowhunters"
This awesomeness (please, please don't disappoint me) premiere's on ABC Family soon to be #Freeform. On my 18th birthday, I went out for dinner. The start of Clary Fray's 18th year is far more eventful. Instead of a party, the promising young art student is thrown into a world of monsters, magic, family secrets and love. All the legends are true.
2. "Friends"
Your job's a joke, you're broke, your love life's D.O.A. Sound familiar, anyone? The pilot is now as old as most of the people reading this, but it's great. It has romance, friendship and a lot of laughter as we follow four friends on their journey through the emotional puberty that is your 20s.
3. "Gilmore Girls"
Maybe you're looking for something funny and with substance. I cannot stress the awesomeness of this show. Female-driven, funny and profound -- you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll want to move to Stars Hollow, or read a lot. Just watch it.
4. "Daredevil"
Or you're in the mood for something a little darker. Or you're a hardcore comic book fan, you've got options.
"Devil" in his name aside Matt Murdock's a man on a mission. To save his city (this isn't an arrow rip off, I swear). Lawyer by day, vigilante by night, blinded and orphaned as a child, Murdock dawns a mask to fight (literally) injustice in "Daredevil."
5. "Jessica Jones"
Wanna go even darker? OK, so Jessica Jones is not a hero. She's just a woman with super strength and a lot of trauma. But hey if a creepy guy in purple made you his puppet for eight months you'd have some issues, too.
6. "Legends of Tomorrow"
If you're a "DC" or "Doctor Who" fan, "Legends of Tomorrow" is worth watching. The Flash, The Green Arrow, The White Canary, and others team up to travel through time and stop a major threat. If they fail, an immortal, evil overlord takes over the world and everyone they've ever known will suffer. No pressure, right?
7. "Supergirl"
I have an occasional weakness for shows that rip out my heart. So sometimes it's nice to watch something... empowering. It's a bird, it's a plane, it's SUPERGIRL!!! I loved super girl growing up. I love superheroes; I'm a feminist. So I guess it's not shocking that I love "Supergirl." Being a hero is never easy, especially when you're living in your cousin's rather large shadow. But Kara Zor-el is up for the challenge.
Go forth and binge, friends.
