Why Show Choir Made Me a Better Person
Going into high school I was a mess. I didn’t have a lot of friends, I didn’t know how to talk to people, and I was so depressed and anxious I didn’t know how to do my school work. The first year I was miserable. Then I started to make friends, and then I joined organizations in my school and things got better.
I found a home in my school where I could escape from everything for ten hours a week with people who shared my interests and my talents and we created something amazing. Through this home I gained so much more than skill. I gained confidence, friendships, time management, social skills, and how to still function on less than three hours of sleep. This home was my show choir.
These kids were my rock. The parent volunteers, my director, and my choreographers were my supporters. I always felt welcome in the choir room every single day. Apart from mastering poofs, curling irons, bobby pins, wigs, and quick changes, I mastered how to be a person.
I learned how to deal with people and how to deal when people are upset with you. I learned that people in the world will criticize you and judge you, but you can’t get any better if you let that get to you. I learned that no matter how much time and effort you put into something, it will never be perfect, and people will not like it. I learned you don’t always win. Sometimes you have to take second, third, fourth, even last place before you figure out what you need to change. I learned how to work with people and how to be a leader to a group. The most important thing I learned, though, is how to be kind to and love others. There will be days where the world sucks and you can’t take it anymore, but when you walk into a room and people hug you because they’re excited you’re there is the best feeling in the world. Spending every day working with your best friends is incredible and when you’re all up on stage performing together, it’s even better.
Show choir is more than just glitter and hair poofs and makeup. Show choir is a community. Every single person is rooting for you in the audience and every single person on stage is supporting each other. Getting harmonies right on the first try is the best feeling in the world cause that’s the moment you all know that you fit together. Getting the choreography perfect finally is such a rush. Every accomplishment you have, you have together. Every friendship you make, will be a long lasting one. Show choir has taught me to be the best at everything I do no matter what it is, and to always dream big.
