We can only assume that a day in the life of Kim Kardashian West is very interesting. It must revolve around perfectly flattering selfie lighting, spandex outfits, controversial tweets, and of course, Kanye West. But, at what point does this extravagant lifestyle change from a joking matter to an unhealthy role model for young girls? Think about the perfectly posed selfies women like Kim Kardashian West post on a daily basis for the young women in our society to see, and even emulate.
Last week, Kardashian West decided to begin her week with tweeting a (censored) naked selfie. While scrolling through your Twitter feed, seeing something like that may get a reaction out of you, but it may not. You are probably used to women like Ms. West posting provocative pictures for attention and fame. Have you ever thought about how upsetting it is that we are so used to seeing these things come from the women young girls in our society call “role models?” Chloe Moretz, star of the new film "The 5th Wave," instantly took offense to the post and called out Kim on twitter. Chloe tweeted “I truly hope you realize how important setting goals are for young women, teaching them we have so much more to offer than just our bodies.” Chloe makes a very valid point. Female celebrities should be using the platform that they are given to show young women how to be self-respecting, confident individuals.
A few other celebrities have spoken out about the controversial post. On Tuesday, Bella Thorne, star of the 2017 film "Amityville: The Awakening," tweeted “I think every woman should be allowed to make their own choices with their OWN bodies so...” She continued into another tweet with “-and it’s not our place to tell them what they can and can’t do with their body…” While I agree with Bella’s sentiments, I do believe that whether they like it or not, all female celebrities become role models for young women. How these celebrities use their fame is the true measure of their confidence and self-worth. P!NK said it best in her post on Twitter, commending all of the women out there using their brains and talents rather than their bodies to get where they’re going in life. A line from her post states, “In the quiet moments, you will feel something deeper than the fleeting excitement resulting from attention, you will feel something called pride and self-respect.” My thoughts exactly, P!NK.
We do need to urge our young women to use their brains, their strengths, and their talents rather than their bodies to get ahead in life. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian West may not have the self-respect and confidence that we are trying to teach them, but luckily, there are women like P!NK and Chloe Moretz that these young ladies can look up to. But hey, maybe we should be teaching them not to look up to any of these celebrities at all? Maybe we should be teaching them to know their own self-worth and look up to influential women in their lives and even look to themselves for a “role model.” What do you think?
