Hi! My name is Sarah and I have been a bridesmaid four times, in three different states, in one calendar year.
I often jokingly say that I'm "a part-time bridesmaid and a full-time friend."
I sometimes bring a date, sometimes I don't get a plus one, and then sometimes I think going single is the most fun thing ever!
Let's weigh our options.....
Pros of bringing a date:
1. This is how you get to walk into the wedding…
BOOM. You have a date! You get to show them off all day! Whether you somehow bribed one of your friends with the free food and the open bar (or you have a boyfriend/girlfriend and it is their obligation to go with you)...either way, SCORE! They are awesome.
2. You will always have someone to dance with!
Whether it's a slow dance or an upbeat you always has someone who's going to be the Fred to your Ginger!
3. People don't assume you're an old cat lady.
Even if you are super single you don't have to appear to be! Your date is a wonderful decoy.
Cons of bringing a date:
1. You can't flirt with anyone else...
I mean you could... but it's just kinda rude.
2. You have to stay with your date the whole time.
It's your job to introduce your date to people and not leave them hanging.
3. Other guys think you're taken.
The age old saying of you gotta "Stand By Your Man."
Pros of going single:
1. You can flirt with whomever you want!
Holla! You're free! So hit up that cute waiter you were dying to talk to.
2. You can dance with whomever you want.
They say that "weddings are a great place to meet someone." It won't hurt to let a couple of the groomsmen know you didn't come with a date.
3. Or you can... dance by yourself!
One of the great things about going to a wedding where you don't know anyone is you can really let your freak flag fly! And if you're at a wedding where you know everyone....the same rule applies!
Cons of going single:
1. You don't always have someone to dance with.
I'm just dancing with myself
2. You find yourself alone....
Sometimes weddings also serve as a "family reunion" or a "high school reunion" and sometimes....you didn't go to that high school...
3. Your family members will keep asking you why you're single.
Leave me alone Aunt Flora. I'm doing my best.
In conclusion, just do you! And have an absolute blast, regardless of what you decide, because there are clear benefits to both sides. After all, isn't it all about the bride anyway?
