What I Should Have Told Myself A Year Ago

Hey, I know how you doing.

What I Should Have Told Myself A Year Ago

The future is vastly unclear, but hindsight is 20/20. With that in mind, here's what I should have told myself a year ago, and maybe you can learn a thing or two from what I know can now see clearly.

High school is just that: high school.

College is quickly approaching. Soon it will be a fresh start with new people.

Watch who you surround yourself with now.

I know, I know you hear it all the time from your parents or your small group leader at church, but take head in that. People can either make you a better person or they can’t. You know who these people are, trust your gut.

Don’t let a rumor or a bad experience define you.

I can’t say this enough. Whatever you are going through, I know can hurt like anything but you aren’t what these people say that you are. Honestly, would you have the amazing best friends you have now if you were?

You are deserving of the love you are given. LOVE YOURSELF.

Yes, this is an odd concept to you now, but I can’t say this enough. If I could go back and yell this at you every morning I would. You are worth so much more than what you give yourself credit for. Everyone fails at things; you can’t be perfect even as much as you try. Besides, the times you fail can be great stories later.

Your weaknesses are actually strengths.

You are genuine, you are open minded, you are overly loving, you are weird, you never stop talking, you are a writer, you love reading, you love Jesus, you are strong willed, you are many things, good things.

YOU JAM TO THAT SONG NO ONE KNOWS

Because one day you will walk into your dorm and your suitemate will be jamming to it and it will be a great friendship building moment

Explore your weird passions.

I’m telling you this as I write for the Odyssey. That should be a good enough reason.

Boys are going to be stupid.

Wish I could say I have this great understanding of them now, but that would be a lie. Just know that.

God is working all things together for your good.

It doesn’t seem like it right now and you may be bitter but trust me It all works out.

You are a weird person.

But you know what? It’s a great thing because some day you are going to be sitting in car with people that you love and they will sing theatre songs with you, laugh at your lame jokes and go with you to bookstores just because.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
