Stop multitasking. Stop trying to accomplish five tasks as soon as you wake up. Stop spending all your time trying to build your resume. Stop spending every waking second crossing items off your 200 task long to-do list. Stop feeling like you are always behind. Stop feeling like you'll never catch up. Just stop.
You're driven. You're ambitious. You have goals. There are so many things you want to do with your life, and you're just starting to check things off the list of what you want to accomplish. You have a life plan that is going to take you to amazing places. Don't abandon that. That isn't the point that is being made here. The point is you need to slow down- even if it's just for five minutes.
Quit multitasking. I bet you're reading this while you're trying to walk to class, or trying to write that paper. And that's great -- don't let me stop you from accomplishing the things you need to -- but I know how tiring it is trying to do 100 things before you let your head hit the pillow at that unreasonable hour that your parents would be shocked by.
At this point you have probably mastered multitasking. You can probably carry out a conversation with your mom on the phone while doing an assignment, helping your roommate pick out an outfit, sorting laundry, and eating dinner all at once. While that's impressive (and you should include that on your resume as a special skill) you should stop doing it.
If you multitask it's pretty likely you also like to constantly be busy. While this is good and can be a major advantage in college, it's difficult to keep up with everything. Before you realize what you've done you've probably joined five clubs, signed up for 19 credit hours, accepted two jobs, and volunteered ten hours a week to an organization.
This is why you've got to take a break every now and then. Whether you take a break for a hour every day or for 10 minutes once every six months I promise if you take a break to do anything you want or maybe even to do nothing at all you'll feel better about what you're doing in life and what you're trying to accomplish. It's easy for life's day to day tasks to make you feel exhausted and burnt out. It's easy for school to make you feel like giving up. The demands of school and life can make you feel like you're behind in a race where you can never catch up. While taking a break might not help you jump ahead of those things that are constantly two steps ahead of where you are, it will help you change your attitude about the race you are running.
