Bernie Sanders has had an impressive impact on liberal opinion throughout the democratic primaries. Millennials specifically have “felt the Bern;” however, as the presidential nominees are most likely Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, many Sanders' fans seem to be questioning an allegiance to either candidate. What many have yet to realize is that a lot of Sanders’ platform is also part of Clinton's. In fact, Clinton and Sanders voted the same way 93 percent of their time together in congress. If you watch their debates you often see that they agree on many issues. The Business Insider also releases an article drawing connections between the two candidates. Here are six major reasons why Sanders' fans should vote Hillary over Trump:
1. Both candidates support raising the minimum wage.
The difference is that Sanders supports a national raise to $15 while Clinton supports a national raise to $12, and then $15 only in specific circumstances where companies can afford to pay workers without going bankrupt or suffering extreme financial issues. Clinton is not the only democratic leader who is very hesitant about raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour. In fact, most democratic leaders would not support the “Fight For Fifteen” due to high economic concern.
2. Both Clinton and Sanders acknowledge climate change and plan to add large numbers of solar panels by 2020.
They each have other individual ideas to protect the climate, but the important part is that they believe that people impact the environment. Trump, on the other hand, is not convinced global warming exists and tweeted: “The concept of Global Warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.”
3. Both support gun control.
Sanders and Clinton agree that you should go through a background check before being able to own a gun; however, Clinton supported legislation stating that victims of gun violence should be able to sue manufacturers for issuing guns to uncertified people. On the other hand, Sanders does not believe gun victims hold that right.
4. Both candidates support a form of Wall Street Reform.
Almost any democratic debate has shown that Sanders loves to talk about taxing Wall Street; however, despite popular belief, both candidates support a form of a Wall Street reformation. Clinton suggests taxing high-frequency trading and creating a “risk fee” for short term or high-risk loans. On the other hand, Sanders would like to split up large financial institutions and take money from wall street to create free college.
5. Both Sanders and Clinton have similar opinions on the police force.
They agree that police should be required to wear body cameras and both wish to outlaw private prisons. They hope that by doing so we will be able to lower the number of prisoners and also make legal issues clearer.
6. The candidates agree almost exactly on immigration issues.
Both believe in immigrates finding a clear path to citizenship and also support the DREAM act. The candidates really only differentiate in regard to Obama’s executive immigration actions. Clinton would like to continue out Obama’s plan, meanwhile, Sanders wishes to use a similar idea but expand it a little further.
