Why You Should Consider Going Greek

When most people hear the words 'Greek Life', some less-than-appealing judgments and stereotypes float around in their thoughts. There are so many reasons people have a bad view of Greek communities as a whole. Most people think sororities and fraternities are exactly like they see them in movies and television. Some of the most common misconceptions about Greek life are that 'you pay for your friends' or 'every sorority/fraternity hazes' or 'everyone in Greek life is stuck up or pretentious'. Which is far, far from the reality of Greek life.

Being a part of the Greek community myself, I've experienced enough to know what it's really like. And joining Greek life was honestly one of the most wonderful decisions I've made. As cliche as that sentiment is, it really is true. From the outside looking in it seems intimidating, which is exactly how I felt. It seems like everyone has a place or knows exactly how they fit into the Greek community and you're still trying to figure out how and if you would fit in. And I'm here to tell you that you WILL find your place. I did, and so have about 9 million other people.

If you want to be a part of an organization where your ambitions shine and your passions thrive, Greek life is the place for you. Each organization has a different philanthropy or philanthropies they work with to raise money or work with one-on-one. There's such a wide range of philanthropies represented in the Greek community, I guarantee you'll find one you're passionate about. Ultimately, that's the main focus of Greek life. Having a special bond with a group of people who share your passions and values.

In my personal experience I've found a group of women who help me strive to be the best person I can be. I've found a home away from home. I've found friends who are with me for life. I've found a philanthropy that motivates me every single day to be a better role model. I've found an organization that mirrors my personal beliefs and values. And most importantly, I've become a part of something that I will cherish for the rest of my life. If you ask any member of any Greek community across the world, I know they'd have the same answer as me.

So, why should you consider going Greek? Well, because if I've learned anything from being a part of the community myself, it's that everyone has a place and will find their home. College is a time for self-discovery and learning experiences, and what better way to do that than with people who share your ambitions and passions?

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
