The look on peoples’ faces when you tell them that you are living in a house full of 50 girls is one that is not easily explained. Some understand how exciting it can be. Most, however, are skeptical about how all these girls will get along under the same roof.
The collective reaction of my family and friends from home when I tell them where I will be living for the upcoming school year falls into the latter, "utter disbelief" category. Yet there's something exhilarating about this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live with 50 of my sisters in the Alpha Chi Omega house.
Initially, I was a little skeptical of living with so many girls in one house. It can seem overwhelming at first glance when you think of sharing bathrooms and meal times and completing everyday activities in a timely manner with the amount of people in the house.
The first day of move-in was pure chaos, with everyone arranging and carrying all of their belongings inside at the same time. But what I have found is that move-in day was the most stressful aspect of living with these women. Everything else just fell into place and has been easy ever since.
In every sorority, there is always someone to do something with. For instance, if you want to go work out chances are other sisters were already planning on working out and looking for someone to go with, too. Living in a house of such athletic girls who always seem to be trying to go for a run or get in a quick workout before going out for the night is extremely motivating. And maybe if you are tired and interested in a movie night, other girls are probably feeling the same and are willing to stay in as well.
Another positive aspect of living in the sorority house is sharing meals together. After a long and tiring day of slip-n’-sliding and swimming in a (hopefully sanitary) frat pool, it is so rewarding to be able to walk back to the house with all your sisters and enjoy dinner.
Dinner time is hands down my favorite part of the day. It is where you can come back and share stories of the day with everyone and just have that time to get to know one another better. When you're all sharing a house, it is remarkable how many different personalities and incredible women you'll get to know on a much deeper level.
Overall, this experience is a difficult one to explain to someone who hasn't gone through it themselves. However, most girls in a sorority here at Michigan would be confident enough to say that they are most excited for sophomore year because they get to live in-house with all their sisters.
I mean, who wouldn't want to have over 50 different closets to choose from?
