The 2016 Teen Choice Awards aired on July 31st and handed out awards in over 50 categories in music, film, sports, comedy, television, and the web. The fans did their part to make sure that their favorite stars won by casting over 37 million votes and eagerly watching to see if their top picks received the legendary surfboard in their category. However, thousands of fans took to Twitter shortly after the awards to express their anger and disappointment because of one very specific category and one very specific segment during the show.
The Choice Web Star for Music award was never announced on air, even though it was announced during the 2015 Teen Choice Awards when Shawn Mendes won. Usually this might not be such a big deal, especially with so many categories to announce and a limited amount of time, but fans were especially disappointed because this year's award was given posthumously to a very deserving Christina Grimmie, who died in June after being shot during a meet and greet after a show in Orlando, Florida. Why not air it? Her name wasn't even mentioned during the entire show. As far as I know, there has been no word from Fox (who aired the awards) and no word from the Teen Choice Awards and this is absolutely unacceptable. There was ample opportunity for them to give her fans and her family (who have released a statement expressing their disappointment) this beautiful moment in her memory, or at least have some sort of tribute to her, but she was completely snubbed and blatantly disrespected.
As if it could get any worse than that, the controversy continued to build after people realized that her name was not mentioned even when Jessica Alba took to the stage with teens who lost loved ones to gun violence to call for the world to stop the violence, which became a trending hashtag on Twitter shortly after. If they were calling for an end to gun violence, why not mention Christina? She lost her life to gun violence as well. Why was her family or at least her brother, who witnessed the tragedy and tackled her shooter, not invited to stand on the stage with the rest of the people calling for an end to gun violence? I don't believe I've ever lost respect for anyone so fast.
While the people responsible for this public snub are still staying silent as there is no excuse for their actions, Christina's memory will still live on. She was a beautiful soul who had an amazing ability and talent who deserves better. Shame on you, Fox and shame on the Teen Choice Awards.
