If you are like me and do not know the difference between a Golden Globe and a Grammy, then you are in luck. "Award season" seems like a time for all famous people to get together and congratulate each other for still being famous, but I know there must be more to it since it attracts so many viewers each year. (I mean, it's not statistically possible for ALL of America to be that vain, right?)
In any case, after over 19 years of being clueless when people talk about their favorite celebs dressing up in a formal gown and being handed a trophy, I decided that it is finally time for me to unveil one of the mysteries of Hollywood and compile a short list. With this list of the most well-known national television, film, theater and music awards, I will no longer have to ask the question, "What in the name of Oscar is an Emmy?"
1. Grammy Awards
The Grammy Awards, aka "The Grammys" (not to be confused with your grandmother's sewing circle), is a ceremony meant to recognize the biggest names in music for the year. I know that watching a bunch of singers get awards and not do a lot of singing would be a shame to miss, but sadly this award ceremony already took place on February 15, so you'll have to watch reruns.
2. Academy Awards
Now, this one confuses me. I get going from "Grammy Awards" to just "The Grammys" -- but going from "Academy Awards" to "Oscars" seems hardly like a nickname to me. Besides the name confusion, the real question is, will Leo win one this time?! Find out at 7 p.m. EST, Feb. 28, on ABC.
3. Golden Globe Awards
As the name suggests, this prestigious award recognizes television and film success from all nations around the globe. This exciting dinner and ceremony took place on Jan. 10, 2016. Although I'm not overly interested in who won which award, I am curious to know what was served to eat. I hope that they had good dessert at least.
4. Emmy Awards
Another big player in the award season is the Emmy Awards, more commonly known as the "Emmys." The Emmy Awards probably have some of the coolest trophies, which look like an angel holding up a big ball of yarn. However, I'll have to hold off on this one until my future career as a television star begins (ha), as these awards are given to "recognize excellence within various areas of television and emerging media," according to the very official-looking website for the Emmys.
5. Tony Awards
This ceremony recognizing success in live theatrical productions is actually called "The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theatre," but I think that "Tony Awards" will do. If you're dying to know who won, you'll have to wait until June 12, 2016. I know it's a bit outside of the traditional award season, but hey, I don't make the dates. (Maybe the Tony Awards didn't get the memo because they had already broken out into a musical number.)
Although I could go on and on about all of the awards that make up "award season," there would be no point. Those who care already know and those who don't care probably wouldn't read it anyways. Besides, most of the other names are self-explanatory (MTV Music Video Awards. Hmm, wonder what that one could be about). Now go into the world and impress all of your friends at parties, and take pride in the fact that you now know how to respond when someone says, "What in the Golden Globe is a Grammy?"
