I acknowledge that there is a large population that hates country music. The music we like certainly can be a defining quality; sometimes it says a lot about us and sometimes it is a little unexpected. From when we were little kids, we have been asked what kind of music we like, as it is one of the simplest questions that usually goes along with, “What’s your favorite food?” and, “What color do you like best?” Many take pride in the bands and solo artists that they have kept up with over the years, and quite a few take great satisfaction in knowing country music is not included in their preferences.
While I understand that some feel strongly about their arguments against country, I think it is my turn to step in. Country music is a genre that can be appreciated universally. The joyful plucks of the banjo and the soulful twang of the singer’s riffs make it genuine feel-good music. The genre also has a pretty wide spectrum. The lyrics range from extremely personal and deep (Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw, a heart wrenching song about his father) to upbeat and less serious (House Party by Sam Hunt, a song about making a night in fun). There are some classic hilarious songs that everyone recognizes (She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy by Kenny Chesney). Bands like Zac Brown Band or Rascal Flatts are ones that are generally more well-received by those who are still warming up to country. ZBB appeals to those more interested in acoustic or folk music, and Rascal sings pop country for Top 40 radio fans.
But, if you are a true fan, then you know that artists like Miranda Lambert and Eric Church are some of the most lovable and unique musicians. Some say that all country sounds the same, but the more you listen, the more you realize how each singer has a distinct personality and sound. Miranda is a fiery spirit who loves to sing about independence and revenge. Her raspy sound contrasts with the more soulful, smooth voice of Carrie Underwood, who reflects on family, love, and growing up.
Country music appeals especially to college students. More of us should love it! It is all about the importance of family, friends, music, food, and cold beer. Perfect for pregames, tailgating, and background music for our boring dorm chores like laundry and dishes.
If you aren’t a big country music lover but want to expand your musical palate, here are my recommendations to start with: Miranda Lambert’s White Liar, Keith Urban’s We Were Us, Florida Georgia Line’s Sun Daze, Eli Young Band’s Even If It Breaks Your Heart, Dierks Bentley’s I Hold On, and Darius Rucker’s Wagon Wheel.
Some of these picks will put you in an unabashedly cheery mood, and others might even have you reflecting on the important things in life. Either way, I guarantee they are worth a listen.
