Shailene Woodley - Movie Star Turned Activist

(Continued from last week.)

Just as much as I love Emma Watson I equally love Shailene Woodley! Not only does she play a kick-a$$ Tris Prior in the Divergent movie series, not only are her looks absolutely stunning, and not only does she pull off both the short hair and long hair look flawlessly but Shailene Woodley is also a huge environmental activist. As most of you are probably aware of her protests and arrest due to the Dakota Access Pipeline, Woodley also makes a lot of day-to-day choices about taking care of the Earth’s environment.

Now first things first who is Shailene Woodley?

She was born on November 15, 1991 in San Bernardino County, California. Her first big acting break was on the Secret Life of the American Teenager from 2008 to 2013. She has been in a bunch of films including The Descendants, The Fault in Our Stars, and of course the Divergent Series. Woodley currently has not gone to college, but that hasn’t stopped her one bit on trying to make our world a better place.

Shailene Woodley is huge environmental activist! If you don’t believe me here are a couple quotes from her that truly show how passionate she really is. Here is one quote where she says, “I think there’s a lot of work to be done with our societies. My biggest passions are the environment and health. And when I say ‘health’ I mean the secrets behind health and our food system.”

And don’t forget this one, “the amount of waste we have is so frustrating, so at home I try to only buy bulk, and I go to the farmer’s markets. The amount of waste is what inspired me to start researching health, and what we can do to live more minimally.”

Then finally this one which speaks leaps and bounds to the kind of lifestyle the Woodley lives, “I exclusively buy used clothes. I’m going to be a citizen of this planet, and I’m going to do my responsibility and live in stride with nature inside of constantly fighting against her.” Now along with only buying used clothes Woodley also collects her own spring water, makes her own toothpaste, lotion and soaps, and forages for food in the wild. So not only is she an activist for big time environmental movements but also makes environmentally conscious decisions every minute of every day.

Recently, Woodley has also been doing a lot with the board of Our Revolution. Our Revolution is an organization that is working towards a “political revolution”. The organization wants to educate people about political issues and the “new generation of progressive leaders”, in the hope of “empowering millions to fight for progressive change” (Our Revolution).

Now as I stated at the beginning of my article the most recent movement Woodley has been protesting against is the Dakota Access Pipeline. So what is the Dakota Access Pipeline? It is a $3.7 billion oil pipeline project and it would pass through four states (North and South Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois) and likewise destroy many sacred Native American sites as well as huge environment degradation (CCN). It is projected to carry 470,000 barrels of crude oil a day (CCN). And currently “the project has face months of resistance from the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and members of nearly 100 more tribes from across the U.S. and Canada,” (Democracy Now). I am sure many of you have heard about Standing Rock Reservation if you go on facebook at all. Standing Rock Reservation is a Native American Reservation for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and if the pipeline is to be completed it “could threaten their sole water source and that, more importantly, they were not consulted before the pipeline was approved,” (The Atlantic).

So what is Shailene doing about it? Well, currently in 2016, Woodley has spent most of her time and energy protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline. And to show how serious she is on October 11th, Indigenous Peoples’ Day, of this year she was arrested for “attempting to blockade the Dakota Access Pipeline construction at two separate worksites,” (Democracy Now). She has even created a t-shirt supporting Standing Rock that says “I Stand With Standing Rock”. And even after her release from prison she was right back to protesting. Woodley has definitely taken this environmental justice issue to heart!

So once again there is definitely more to Shailene Woodley then what originally meets the eye. I highly recommended learning more about the Dakota Access Pipeline because it is something that affects our country directly and there are so many ways that we can all get involved. Plus considering the results of this year’s presidential election it will be interesting to see what happens next in terms of oil use and pipeline in our country.

Here are some website where you can learn more and stay involved. I also encourage you to follow her on Instagram to keep in touch with her most recent efforts.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
