A book to a movie to a TV show? Well, that is what happened with the new series, "Shadowhunters." This fantasy TV series, based off of the book series, "The Mortal Instruments," written by Cassandra Clare, is the second adaption of the series after the 2013 movie, "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones." Its premiere was on January 12th, 2016 and can be viewed on Freeform.
This new TV series revamped the movie with a complete change of cast. Instead of Lily Collins, it features fresh-faced Katherine McNamara as Clary Fray and Dominic Sherwood as Jace Wayland.
During the pilot of this show, Clary Fray, the lead female, finds out on her 18th birthday that she is an angel-human hybrid whose purpose is to hunt demons. When Clary’s mother is kidnapped, Clary must work with fellow Shadowhunters, Jace Wayland, Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario), Isabelle Lightwood (Emeraude Toubia), and her best friend Simon Lewis (Alberto Rosende) to help bring her home.
Having seen the movie, knowing the show was coming out made me excited. However, I was let down but what was aired. The actors are not the right people for the roles of their character. They lack the amazing acting needed to put the characters together and made it seem as though it was just another high school drama show.
Putting relatively new actors into roles of difficult characters and giving them a bad script is a recipe for disaster when fans of the book series and the movie looked so highly to this and expected more from it.
Also, the special effects of this movie could be compared to Power Rangers, cheesy and unrealistic. The show did not flow smoothly when these scenes came on and were just cringe-worthy.
It is hard to see a movie that you loved so much turned into a show that is not as successful nor as fantastic as the movie.
This television series was developed by Ed Decter, who is credited with works such as "Boy Meets World," a successful show. It is sad to see him have a successful show and move on to work on a show that has generated negative reception.
Even though I felt as though this show is not as amazing as the movie, others did. Which is why Shadowhunters has been renewed for a second season.
I hope that with this new season they listen to the input of the viewers and make the changes necessary so that they can have an amazing TV series that reflects the book positively.
