Anyone can be put in a situation when they are uncomfortable, but then sometimes someone can put in a situation where they are trapped and scared and cannot fight for themselves. It happens, and sometimes there isn’t anything that someone can do. A person can be violated sexually. Rape is an act of sexual assault involving sexual intercourse without a person’s consent. A rape can occur at any time to anyone.
Rape can happen on college campuses all over the U.S. In fact, one in every five women experience an attempted rape or completed rape and 80-percent of those victims were attacked by someone they know. Odds are on a college campus that you have come into contact with someone has experienced some type of sexual assault.
Going into college you are looking for new and exciting experiences. You meet a lot of new people at college and sometimes you get into situations you can’t handle. Everybody has their own limits. And having regrets and experiencing something that you didn’t want to do are two completely different things. In college, you’ll experience new things and you’ll be put in new situations that you might that have experienced before. And being in a situation with someone you don’t want to be is a scary thing and sometimes saying "no" isn’t enough. Just because you say it doesn’t mean the attacker is listening. A rape victim blames herself or himself for the attack because they sometimes believe that the way they dressed or looked at a certain time affected on why they got attacked. Dressing provocatively doesn’t mean you are asking to be attacked. Going out with friends and having a good time doesn’t mean you are putting yourself out there to be attacked. It isn’t your fault; you didn’t ask for it in any way.
Sexual violence is something that is advertised on social media and television. It broadcasts the violence that people experience. It also lets others aware of what is going on. People consider the act of rape to the most unreported act of crime in America. Ninety-seven percent of rapists are free. There is nothing pretty about rape or any act of sexual violence. A rape can occur anywhere at any time to anyone. It could happen in a place that you consider safe. It could happen in the most unlikely and by the most unlikely person but it does happen. It happens to both male and female and at all ages.
Rape happens on college campus across the U.S. and most rapes that occur on college campuses are left unreported because they are by someone that the victim knows and sees on a daily basis. In college, you experience new things and situations and things that you didn’t expect to happen can happen. Going into college no one thinks they are going to be a victim of sexual assault. No one walking on the streets of the area they live think that it will happen to them, but rape and any kind of sexual assault can happen anywhere at any time. And no can be prepared for it and no one knows it’s going to happen. But it can happen and that’s the scariest thing.
