Seven Things You Should Know About Being A Music Major

Any major in college will bring struggles. Whether it is math or clinicals, there is always something to stress about. And that is no different for music majors. And I believe that we have the most stressful major out there. From hard class that only music geeks understand, to long night in the practice room, here are the things that make our major so hard.

1. We have pressure from every professor in our department.

In most departments, you might know a couple teachers and some days can get away with out seeing them. However, when every music major and professor are in the same building, you are going to see them. These professors are some of the nicest, most interesting people you well ever meet, but they have the highest expectations, for everyone.

2. Practicing is homework.

I have some friends that don't understand why I am in a practice room so much. I guess they think that I don't do anything in there. But I accomplish so much in that small room. I sing, memorize music, take naps, and have mental breakdowns, sometimes all in the same day.

3. We sometimes go to class three days a week and only get one credit for it.

This is one of the most annoying things. I go to a class and spend so much time studying for it, and I get one credit for it. Ensembles are like this too. You put in all this work and put many hours into it, and you don't get much credit for it.

4. Our classes are hard.

I know your upper level chemistry class might be hard, but have you ever had to listen to a piece of music and then had to notate it and get it pretty perfect in a couple tries? Have you ever had to sightread for a test? It is hard and also intimidating.

5. People think that music is an "easy" major.

I am sorry that you think this. My life is very hard, thank you. I put in a lot of work and also most of the time, I am taking more credits than the limit. 20 credits is doable. And you complain about 13.

6. Juries are a musicians nightmare.

Juries are the finals that you have at the end of the year to see if you have grown as a musician. You dress up, play music in front of a panel of judges, and that determines your grade for that semester. No pressure.

7. It is the most rewarding major out there.

There is no better thrill than performing or learning something new. Also, most people can't do music, so you are pretty darn special.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
