Although coming home for summer is something many people look forward to, once you actually get away from campus the withdrawal starts to set in. While there are a few benefits to being back in your hometown, like having your bed, your pet, and an unlimited food supply, there are many reasons why being home for summer break actually sucks. A lot. Here are seven of those reasons:
1. Your best friend is no longer a short elevator ride away.
What once was a daily ritual has now become a thing of the past. When you wanted to see your girl up on the ninth floor of your building, all you had to do was walk 30 seconds to an elevator, push a button, and then away you went. A few minutes later you were posted up on her futon watching TV and eating her food. It was glorious. Now that you’re home for summer, your new-found best friend is a few hours away and the closest you get to hanging out on her futon is face-timing from your bedroom.
2. No (good) food is readily available to you at 3 a.m.
Stay up too late and now you’re hungry? Oh well. That pizza place closed two hours ago, and your bad habit of waiting until three just bit you in the butt. Being on campus meant that you had ten different options to choose from when you got in late, and no ham sandwich from your kitchen can even come close to a piece (or three) of pepperoni pizza from your favorite hole in the wall joint. Plus, your parents are never too thrilled when you start microwaving left-overs while they’re trying to sleep. Where is a Catfish Biffs when you need one?
3. There is no Oval Beach in your neighborhood.
Somehow laying in your backyard to get in some light reading isn’t nearly as satisfying as it is when you’re on the Oval. There must be something about having a few hundred of your closest friends (and their beautiful puppies) around that make it so much more enjoyable.
4. Getting together with friends requires a lot more planning.
On campus practically everyone had the same days free during the week, so when you wanted to go out most of your friends were available to join you. Now that you’re home, half of your friends are in another state, and your hometown friends all have different schedules. This makes getting together for a GNO a lot more difficult considering none of your schedules line up (except for one Tuesday night a month from now). So much for spending your summer break making a ton of memories with your old friends, right?
5. Therapy dogs no more.
Gone are the days when you could walk around campus and see the joyous sight of therapy dogs. When you thought your day was about to be average, puppy breath came into your life and changed everything for the better. Now that you’re home, the closest things you have to those happy little puppies are the neighbor’s yappy dogs. (Unless you have a puppy of your own, of course).
6. Your life just got a whole lot less exciting.
On campus, there is always something fun, new, and exciting to do that can take up your spare time. From clubs promoting on the oval, fundraisers, free events, or just classes at the RPAC, your days are never boring. Until you go home that is. Now your free time is spent curled up in sweat pants watching reruns of friends for four hours. Don’t you miss being in an environment where every day is game day?
7. Nobody in your hometown appreciates the Bucks quite like you do.
Unless you live in Columbus, then your hometown probably doesn’t get as excited about the Buckeye’s as you do. Even though you’ve managed to convert your family into Ohio State lovers, you still miss the feeling of being home with all of your enthusiastic friends. (You know, the home away from home.) Plus, being home for summer is super agonizing because guess what’s right around the corner- football season! Can I get a “GO BUCKS!”? Of course I can ;)
Although being back with your family and old friends is extremely relaxing, a part of you never stops longing for the sweet smell of the Ohio State campus. O-H!
