The University of Maryland has an abundance of abroad programs to offer students, which could be for a semester or summer or winter break for a shorter time. Here's a list of a couple of the best and most popular destinations.
Melbourne, Australia

Who wouldn't want to spend a couple of months in the land down under? It's warm year round, so you can catch a tan and learn how to scuba dive and surf. Melbourne University is also one of the highest-ranked colleges in Australia and offers an amazing learning experience. Besides, it's located in the city and close to the beach, so there's always something to do.
Barcelona, Spain

This is one of UMD's biggest programs and Spain's second-largest city. Here's an easy way to pick up the Spanish language by emerging yourself in the country's culture. This program also allows you to coach youth basketball and baseball leagues, teach English at a school or take different classes like dancing and cooking. Being immersed directly in the city also provides students with a wide range things to do, like rooting on one of world's most renowned soccer teams.
Copenhagen, Denmark

Another popular UMD abroad destination is Copenhagen, where you'll study at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad. This program gives you the chance to explore the city and get that Instagram of the row of colored houses you always see. This university also offers a wide degree of classes in different majors like psychology, architecture and computer science.
Beijing, China

This is one of Maryland's farthest trips and there's no denying it will be a long plane ride, but it's worth it. UMD offers a $500 scholarship to the first 10 students who commit to this program, creating an incentive to go. It offers a chance to learn more about the Chinese language and culture, while attending one of their best universities, Beijing Language and Culture University.
Rome, Italy

This program is based out of the American University of Rome and offers a chance to explore the city's 2,000 year history. It's a great place to enhance your Italian skills and catch up on your art history. Italy also has other amazing cities to travel to like Florence, Venice, Milan and so many others, making it a great travel destination.
Cape Town, South Africa

Not many people choose Africa as a destination for study abroad, but this is one of the best and prettiest programs. This trip allows you to learn the Zulu language and really explore the culture of Cape Town. You can also participate in a home stay, where you can connect with a South African family, offering something new. There is also a community service week where students can choose a local organization they want to help out for a week.
London, England

This is a classic trip that many UMD students take to learn more about the British culture, but to primarily explore all of the pubs. This program allows you to attend the Queen Mary University of London or to participate in an internship, gaining international work experience. If you're a tea lover or just really love Prince Harry's good looks, this is the place for you.
