Netflix recently released their newest addition to their collection of Netflix original series; Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events. This is a review of the all new series that has been recently released.
For the most part, everyone remembers the 2004 film A Series of Unfortunate Events with the star studded cast including Jim Carrey, Jude Law, and Meryl Streep. The film was directed by Brad Sterling and was released around the time the book series was most popular drawing crowds to the movie theaters to see the silver screen adaptation of the series of novels. It was well done and entertaining for people who had seen the film at a young age and were fans of the books. However, the Netflix original series adaptation so far has blown it out of the water. It stars Neil Patrick Harris as the villainous Count Olaf and the actor knocks the role out of the park. Which is no surprise for the great NPH. The series also contains a well known cast as well including Will Arnett, Cobie Smulders, Joan Cusack, and Patrick Warburton who plays Lemony Snicket. Along with a well known cast the actors who play the Baudelaire children are relatively new faces and they do a good job of portraying these characters. The series takes a different approach than the 2004 film did with story telling and it works out perfectly. Patrick Warburton is seen throughout the series narrating on screen while the characters remain on screen acting. Neil Patrick Harris also said in an interview to describe the series as “a much darker take on the material than has been seen before” which somewhat does hold true throughout the series. As opposed to the idea with the Jim Carrey film that it was more comical than a story of dismay. Which is something audiences would expect when seeing a Jim Carrey film. However, this show does have its comedic moments and when the appear they are hilarious. The series also goes into the fourth book where as the film only ended at the third. The season is comprised of 8 episodes giving each book 2 episodes in the season. I was skeptical at first when I was going through my Netflix account and saw that it had been released. I’m actually glad that I did stop to check out the first episode because this series is actually well written, well thought out, and has an excellent cast that keeps viewers entertained. This series is the most expensive series that Netflix has put money into out of all of their other series. Another fun fact is that the number 13 plays a big role in the series. The series was release on Friday the 13th. It was released in 2017 which is 13 years after the Jim Carrey film release. The title “A Series of Unfortunate Events” has 26 letters (13*2). Also, there are 13 books in the series each with 13 chapters. If you have some free time and you seem to have gone through Netflix give this new series a look and see if you enjoy it.
