It creeps up on you, senior year. One minute you're partying your money (and liver) away, and the next you're slammed right in the face with internships and graduation and grown up job applications. Where did the time go? Now you're having to go shop for "business casual" clothing and make a real resume and actually start to map out a plan for your life. Congratulations, my friend, you've just entered the Senior Sprint.
Everything seems daunting, doesn't it? Sorting through all of the options and opportunities out there can be a full-time job in itself, especially if you have a major like mine (English) that doesn't have a clear-cut direction laid out for you. Take my advice and go to Career Services instead of just fumbling around like a two-year-old that has lost its mother in the grocery store. And, yes, that's exactly what it feels like for all you Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors that haven't hit your Senior Sprint yet.
It's kind of like when you started your senior year of high school and realized that you still hadn't taken the ACT, started any college applications, or figured out what in the world you could possibly want to major in. But, trust me, this is way worse. Now you're trying to figure out if grad school is the right option for you (and if so, which one?), where you want to live (because nobody wants to be that person still living with their parents after college), and just what exactly you can do with that degree you just labored four years over.
With everything looming just beyond that shiny graduation cap and robe, it's time to get down to business. It's time to crack down and bring up your GPA that probably isn't what you would like it to be. Maybe throw in some clubs, activities, or volunteer work that will boost your resume as well. Thankfully, I go to a university that has over 100 clubs and organizations to choose from. If you're in a fraternity or sorority, use it to your advantage. There's bound to be at least one alum working in the field you wish to go into, and they are usually more than happy to help if you just ask. Any chance you have to do something that will help you in your job/internship hunt, take it.
That being said, don't kill yourself trying to get everything done immediately. It's your last year of college. Enjoy it. Don't fritter away all of your time, but also don't forget to throw some fun in there occasionally. You don't want to burn yourself out before you even graduate. And most importantly, remember, we're all in this together.
