How many of us are guilty of taking selfies? I'm pretty sure just about everyone will be raising their hands. Now, with the invention of the selfie stick, it's so much easier for us to snap that most coveted selfie. So many people are probably going to be mad at this, but here we go!
Honestly, I'm selfie impaired. Yes, I take them (where people won't see me), but I'm 100 percent petrified to post them. My most recent one (which was probably the fourth one I've posted) was edited and posted by one of my friends.
Now, while we're all thinking about how attractive we look while snapping away (probably in the middle of the sidewalk), the people you're probably blocking have a few choice words for you. You may be thinking, "I look so adorable right now and want to share this really cool thing I'm doing with the rest of the world." The people around you? Yeah, they're not thinking the same thing.
In the process of you getting the perfect lighting, onlookers are openly staring at you wondering how long this is going to take. Honestly, while you're snapping away at about 87 different angles, strangers are judging every single one of those pictures. Yeah, you're told not to care what people think, but selfies are so overdone that maybe you should care.
Don't even get me started on the filters. Once you find the perfect lighting for that pic, you're going to go through every single filter on multiple apps to make sure when you post "#selfiesunday #nofilter" it actually looks like no filter was used. No one is really going to believe that.
You may think selfies are harmless, but they can be detrimental. How many of us trade precious time with friends and family to get a selfie that you're not going to care about next week? Today, that picture could be worth 100+ likes. Next week? That pic will be lost in the depths of Insta. You're no longer living in the moment, you're living in your phone.
Selfies are really starting to get out of hand. People are starting to risk their lives for their selfie game. Is that worth your life? Probably not. Selfies while driving? Why is that even a thing? There are so many pictures floating around the internet of people taking a selfie when they should be more worried about what is happening around them -- like this guy and the tornado -- what?
Long story short, there is a time and a place for that selfie. Don't ruin precious time with your family and friends. Don't take a selfie when you're in a precarious situation. Just live in the moment! You're not going to remember every selfie you took or the amount of like you got in a few years.
