Why I Secretly Want School To Start Again

The first month of summer break was amazing... but then I found myself wishing school would start again.

I graduated high school last month and was so excited for summer. My excitement can be attributed to the fact that this was the first summer I didn’t have camps to attend or places to travel to, which meant I could completely relax. The first month of break was amazing: car rides with music blasting, going out to eat really good food, fun nights spent with friends. But after a while, I found myself strangely wishing that I was back in school.

Here are 10 reasons why I actually want school to start again:

1. My sleeping schedule is so messed up.

Because I don’t have school to wake up for, I allow myself to sleep at 2 a.m. and wake up at noon. Sometimes, I’ll wake up, eat breakfast, and then go straight back to sleep. Occasionally, I’ll even take three hour long naps in addition to the ten hours of sleep I’m already getting.

2. When my friends all leave to go on vacation, I'm stuck inside with no one to hang out with.

Don’t get me wrong, I love spending time alone and working on whatever I need to do, but after all your friends leave to exciting places around the world, you’ll feel slightly lonely too.

3. Binge watching all those shows on Netflix actually makes my eyes hurt.

In the beginning, I was ecstatic. All this free time to catch up on my favorite shows? Sweet! But, five seasons of Grey’s Anatomy later, my eyes actually feel sore, as if someone is applying pressure on them.

4. Without all those tests, I feel strangely unmotivated.

During the school year, I had a set schedule where I would allocate about two hours each day for studying. Now that I don’t have tests anymore, I have nothing to work towards. No more good grades to be earned, no more equations to be memorized, and no more short term goals.

5. I don't interact with as many people as before, making my communication skills slightly rusty.

In school, I would communicate with teachers, classmates, and friends. Now, I communicate with my parents… and that’s about it.

6. Sitting on a couch all day = the ultimate sedentary lifestyle.

I’m not a super athletic person, I must admit. However, during the school year, I would go on quick runs over the weekend or do yoga routines before school to alleviate stress. Since I’m now on break, I’m not stressed for tests, so I end up not exercising. But the fact that I’m living a sedentary lifestyle ironically makes me more stressed…

7. I feel as if I'm growing slightly crazy.

I’m inside most of the time. I belt out ballads like I’m the next Beyoncé. I sing when I’m microwaving mac and cheese, I sing when I’m watching TV, and I even sing while lying on the floor of my living room!

8. I have no more money left from eating out too much.

When summer break first started, I was so excited to be done with school, I went out to eat with my friends every other day. A month later, I realize I only have about $10 left in my wallet.

9. I'm forgetting how to solve integrals.

All those skills I learned in school? I basically don’t remember how to do anything. The other day when I was cleaning out my closet, I found some old calculus worksheets. The numbers and symbols on the page were indecipherable… oops.

10. Sometimes, I wear pajamas the whole day.

When I know I’m not going out that day, I’ll wear my pajamas around the house. Wearing pajamas all day sounds relaxing, but after doing so for multiple days a week, it begins to feel like I’m slowly wasting my life away.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
