Remember the days of watching The Secret Life of the American Teenager on ABC Family? No? You're lying, because we all did.
Since binge watching all five seasons (and 121 episodes) on Netflix this fall, I've come to realize there are some overarching truths to the series, mainly that it probably could've used some more talented staff writers.
1. Amy was a miserable person. I understand that she was a teenage mother and that comes with its more than fair share of challenges, but even when she had a fully supportive family and (pretend) husband, she was selfish and immature.
2. Everyone got pregnant. Everyone. Amy, Adrian, Cathy, Amy's mom. That teacer you saw on screen once? Pregnant. The football coach? Probably pregnant. It's like the writers took a single idea and said, "Hey, let's see how every character does in this same exact situation."
3. Ricky deserved better. The guy completely turned his life around. He survived physical and sexual abuse, learned to love his foster parents and himself, went to counseling and forgave his alcoholic mother. And he got stuck living with miserable Amy above a butcher shop?
4. The show should have been called The Secret Life of Ashley Juergens. Because where did she disappear to? Mysterious road trips, mysterious surprise moves to Italy...
5. Grace Bowman was likely the craziest out of anyone. She flip flopped on her religious beliefs with every season and was "finicky" with boys. Remember when she thought she killed her dad because she had sex? Or when she skipped med camp to spend a summer with Adrian in a condo?
6. Mr. Boykewich did the most. He gave Ricky a job and place to live, he rescued Betty and Chloe from prostitution and he had to put up with Ben's utter nonsense. They don't call him the King for nothing.
