Not too long ago I wrote a rather unpopular article on being a hot mess and now I am here to share a piece of information in regards to that topic. For years now the week before the first day back to school has been a week full of pep talks on how this time I will for sure have my life together. You say you will definitely take full advantage of my very expensive planner, you will definitely be studying every open opportunity, you will actually wear something than norts to class, and the list goes on.
And then the first week of school comes and you spend that week giving myself pep talks about how it's only the first week and I have to get settled in. Next week you will definitely have a study schedule down, next week you will for sure dress more like an adult, next week you will stop binge watching my favorite Netflix series, and just like the week before the list of things you should really be doing goes on and on.
Well, in case you haven't looked at your calendar recently, it is almost mid-October. I still dress like I am about to workout (even though I am not going to), my planner looks like an ink pen threw up on it some days and other days it looks like I forgot that I have stuff to accomplish, and I am way too deep into my current Netflix series to even consider studying for my mid-term (sorry Mom and Dad).
But I have made a recent discovery that has kept me not feeling like a total loser for not having myself organized. The secret to having your sh** together is that you only have to appear as if you do.
Yeah, as it turns out no one has their sh** together. I feel like I have been lied to my whole life. The reason successful people look so well put together is because they have known this secret the whole time. It is all an illusion. The truth is that they too are feeling like they need to get on track and they go through all of the same frustrations of scurrying around like a chicken with their head cut off. The difference between us and those you admire or find successful is that they don't show that they don't have it together.
This isn't to say that there is no reason to actually be organized or that people aren't actually doing what they need to be doing it. Because it is important to be on top of your school work, your job assignments, and to make yourself look presentable. What I am saying is that the people who are organized don't always feel that way and they may look on you some days and wish they were like you and that they were as well put together as you are.
And another important thought to keep in mind is everyone has their day of looking like they just rolled out of bed, everyone makes a mistake in school, everyone struggles at their job, and everyone definitely can admit to being far too lazy.
So, stop beating yourself for all everything and start celebrating the small accomplishments in life like when someone compliments how well you did your make-up when it's actually leftover from the day before when you turn that assignment in at the exact moment it was due, and definitely when you finish watching that Netflix series. Go ahead, treat yo-self.
