The Second Week Of School Slump

The Second Week Of School Slump
Svein Halvor Halvorsen

As the second week of school commences and the excitement of welcome week slowly dies down, students everywhere realize that it’s time to get serious about their college classes. Now that syllabus week is over and the teachers are actually caring about what time you arrive to class, the second week slump becomes very real. Here are three ways to survive the second week of school.

1. Get involved.

Now that Welcome Week and all the fun on-campus events are over, it is time to actually look around and become involved in something you are interested in. Whether that is a club or Greek life, there are so many ways to become involved that it is hard to be bored. Even if clubs aren’t your thing, people in college have so many diverse interests that there is bound to be something that interests you.

2. Don’t lock yourself in your dorm room.

I know it seems easy. You come back from a full day of classes and you have a few hours to kill before dinner. While it seems enticing to lock yourself in your room and binge watch Netflix, don’t do it. At least don’t lock yourself in your room. Open your door and try to get to know the people in your dorm because those people are what make college so interesting. I guarantee that you will probably meet someone that is more entertaining than Netflix.

3. Do your homework.

Sadly college is not like high school. You cannot get away with forgetting to do your homework and hoping that the teacher will excuse you. You will get a zero. And your GPA will drop. The best way to avoid this? Do your homework! Drag yourself out of your bed, walk over to the library, and force yourself to not only do your homework but study as well. Because the biggest problem about the second week slump is the awful realization that grades do matter and you are not here just to have a fun time.

Overall, the second week of school can really suck. Your classes aren’t new and exciting, there are no more welcome events with free food, and you actually have to care about your classes. But the second week is also the time when you find your place on-campus. You start to fall into a routine and pretty soon living on campus and going to class feels completely normal. You find a good core group of friends that you hang out with and pretty soon that second week of school turns into the third month of school and you're getting ready to go home for Thanksgiving break. Right now it can feel like the second and third week of school are dragging on extremely slowly but pretty soon you won't realize how fast it goes by.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
