There's been a lot of excitement around Aztec athletics here at San Diego State, and as a die hard SDSU fan, I couldn't be any prouder.
On Friday, Nov. 8, our women's basketball played against the Point Loma Sea Lions and won 55-52. Later that night, we welcomed our men's basketball team back on the Mesa, and it was one of the best celebrations ever. Tickets were distributed earlier in the week, and within 24 hours all student tickets were taken. The excitement that led to Friday night's game was great, and seeing all the fans in red and black made it even better.
Seeing the number of student fans present made it clear that SDSU has the number one student section in the country (as if we didn't already know it). What I found even more amusing was seeing all the freshmen at their first game, confused and unsure of what was going on. At the end, the Aztecs defeated the Point Loma Sea Lions with a score of 74-45. This season is going to be great and I can't wait to see our Aztecs progress.
As if basketball wasn't enough excitement, Nov. 8 was also our 2014 homecoming game for football. All the events that took place throughout the week prepared students for Saturday's game against the Idaho Vandals. After the Homecoming 5k, everyone got dressed in their Aztec apparel and made their way to Qualcomm Stadium, where everyone was tailgating and having a great time. Oddly enough, my fraternity was one of the only fraternities tailgating in the same section as all the Idaho fans. I was surprised to see so many of their fans in San Diego, but then again it's San Diego. If I lived in Idaho, I would've made my way to San Diego in a heartbeat. Despite being in the middle of all the rivals, we maintained respect for the opposing team.
After hours of tailgating, it was time for kickoff, and as usual, I didn't make it in until the second quarter. In the end, the Aztecs beat the Vandals with a final score of 35-21. Following the game was the KGB Sky Show, and it was probably the best way to celebrate and end homecoming week. The firework show was spectacular and well worth the trolley wait at the end.
Because SDSU is all about greatness and victories, our women's soccer team thought three Aztec victories wasn't enough, so they took the Mountain West Conference Championship title, defeating Wyoming 1-0 in overtime. This earned SDSU an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Our Aztec Pride was so strong, as it always is, and I couldn't be any prouder to call myself an Aztec for life. Our university is growing and doing many great things; not only in terms of athletics, but all around!
