Five Kick-Butt Heroines

Sci-fi movies are some of the most interesting films to experience. Some push past and go beyond the boundaries while some make us think and show us a realistic future. Sci-Fi is my favorite of the movie genres because it's so different. Other than plots though, what else makes sci-fi movies great are the characters.

It takes good characters to sell anything, especially in the crazy world of science fiction. Often, I focus on male characters but for this one, I want to look at the kick butt females I love most, here are 5 of my favorites!

5. Nyota Uhura

It doesn't matter whether you look at the "Original Series" or the new movies. Each version of Nyota Uhura is amazing. She is very talented and super smart - making her one of the best Communication officers in Starfleet. She understands all different dialects of language and can speak them fluently. Uhura is a strong-willed female who has gained all her success on her own merit and she has proved a crucial part of Enterprise Crew since day one.

And did I not, on multiple occasions, demonstrate an exceptional aural sensitivity, and I quote, "an unparalleled ability to identify sonic anomalies in subspace transmissions tests?" -Nyota Uhura

4. Sarah Connor

A single mother who can handle herself fully. Sarah Connor used to be just a small town waitress but then she learned some pretty important future details. In the "Terminator" films, Sarah Connor holds her ground and worked passed people thinking she was crazy. Maybe she is... but I think we're all a little crazy!

A wise man once said, "know thyself". Easier said than done. I've had nine aliases, twenty-three jobs, spoken four languages, and spent three years in a mental hospital for speaking the truth. At least when I was there I could use my real name. Through it all, I've always known who I am and why I'm here. -Sarah Connor

3. Padamé Amidala

While most people don't like the first episodes of Star Was, there's no denying the level of strength and awesomeness that Padamé had throughout them. Sure... she married Darth Vader and may have ended up making choices I'll never understand at the end but everyone makes mistakes. She still held her own though and helped herself better than Anakin protected her. I watched her figure her way out a lot of those predicaments, she seemed two steps ahead of Anakin!

Plus, before she even met Anakin she became Queen of Naboo and Senator of the Galactic Republic. There was a reason Naboo wasn't occupied by the Trade Federation-- she fought against it!

I was not elected to watch my people suffer and die while you discuss this invasion in a committee! -Padamé

Trinity

For me there are many things to love about "The Matrix" and she was one of the characters I loved. She might not have been The One but she played a crucial role in teaching The One what he was supposed to do. She had all levels of kick buttery and a smart mouth to go with it.

She had guns, moves, brains, a killer fashion sense-- basically everything necessary to be one of the coolest movie charactes ever.

"I believe if you are really serious about rescuing him, you are going to need my help. And since I am the ranking officer on this ship, if you don't like it... I believe you can go to hell." - Trinity

Leia Organa

Don't mess with Leia. If anyone can hold her own, it's Leia Organa. A very powerful figure throughout the Star Wars series, Leia moved up the ranks and was behind a number of the Rebel Alliance's plans. From the first moment Luke and Han met her she was kick-butt material. She saved herself just as much as they saved her and she did it a number of other times in the films. It seems fitting that Leia went on to be a general.

Someone has to save our skins. Into the garbage chute, fly boy. -Leia

Movies are nothing without the right characters and these five were just a few that I loved from my favorite Sci-Fi films. So tell me, who are some of your favorites and why?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
