"Scandal's" fall finale did not end favorably if you are a fan of Fitz and Olivia, which I was, but following the fall finale (not directly following...nearly two weeks later), I have decided that I am happy with the way it ended. I guess that means I have also decided that I am no longer a Fitz and Olivia fan.
I cannot for the life of me understand why so many of "Scandal's" fans have rooted for success in their twisted love story. I am not going to lie, I have been guilty to hoping they would end up in Vermont together, even though Jake was obviously the much healthier, more available (not anymore...a wife?) choice. After the November 19 episode, I no longer hope that Olivia and Fitz will work out in the end.
If you're reading this and you're a fan of the White House's newest couple you probably hate me, but think about it, the reality is that presidential affairs are not well received by the public. They would probably be even less accepted if said mistress moved into the White House and began taking on the duties reserved for the First Lady. Yet, that is exactly what "Scandal" fans have been praying for since the beginning of the show: a broken marriage and divided White House.
Within the last couple of weeks, we got that. Fitz and Mellie separated, giving him and Olivia the opportunity to be together in the White House, but it also gave us a new version of Olivia. In order to have everything she and the fans had been wishing for she had to become someone else.
I love Olivia. I love her ability to state, "It's handled" and have every problem be solved. I love her white coats, hats, and independence. However, the beginning of the Fall finale depicted a recipe swapping, table decorating, "trophy wife" version of Olivia. A far cry from the woman that has been gracing our television screens every Thursday for the past four and half years. I found myself asking, "Who is this?" Several times throughout the first half of the episode.
The show ended on a much more positive note...depending how you look at it. Olivia and Fitz had a fight, hashing out everything that has been simmering beneath the surface since she made the move to the White House. She finally admitted that the woman she has been pretending to be is not her, nor is it someone she wants to become.
So, I am happy that she came to that realization at the end of the episode. I am glad that she went home and curled up on her couch with a glass of wine.
What I cannot understand is why I or any other "Scandal" fan thought that their toxic relationship was something to envy...to aspire to. It was full of lies, secrets, and affairs behind closed doors. What is romantic about that?
The end goal that all of us had been rooting for only took away the character we have grown to know. I am happy that we got to see that side of Olivia. It helped me understand that their love affair was not #goals. It was anything but.
