Tonight, for the first time in a while I witnessed a beautiful work of art on the big screen. Although I was excited about the film after watching its preview, I was saddened by the fact that counting me and my boyfriend there was a total of 3 people in the auditorium to watch the movie.
It was an indie film (Independent- not Hollywood produced).
I've heard plenty of people complain that there are no new movies out to watch, nothing original. But the reason for that is simple.
It's because we don't support the new and unknown. We'd rather got to the theater to watch the 5th part of Spiderman rather than support something new.
Our creativity is dying, but it's not because we lack creative people it's because there is no support for the new up and coming films. Unfortunately, there is no support like money.
If we the viewers don't pay to support the original films, there will be no more. We complain and say we want something different to watch on the screen but unless we give a vote with our dollar the new and exciting films don't get made.
Papillion was everything that I had hoped it would be. It felt real and very much a period piece of an innocent man serving time for a crime he didn't commit. 1930's in Paris, the city of lovers. The scenery felt so real.
For these types of films to continue we need to support them. The Sundance Film Institute is responsible for helping create these masterpieces of art. Robert Redford created the school so that artists could be nurtured.
Before doing some research I, thought that Sundance was in California, why not? Anything to do with the film industry is usually in California but not this place. It's tucked away in quiet Utah, so the filmmakers can concentrate.
To protect the Indie film industry and get more original movies out we need to support these films by seeing as many Indies as possible. My boyfriend and I are all about supporting other artists being that we are both creative people.
We keep a watch on the movie Indie list and make sure to attend shows for them. We go to a number of different theaters to support these films. But that's ok with us because we are supporting something that we love.
Most of these films will surprise and delight you. More and more period pieces are being made. Flashbacks to the past and getting to see the way that people lived and dressed is always a joy to me because I love visiting the past.
The next time you see an indie film coming out, especially one from Sundance, be supportive and go see it. I can guarantee that it will be well worth your time and the money you spent on the ticket. Artists must support other artists. Otherwise, no one else will.
Indie films are just as important as the franchise films. Lets all band together and keep the indie films safe!
