Welcome to The Sandlerverse, where it's Adam Sandler all the time. Through this journey through the Sandlerverse, I will be taking a look at all of Adam Sandler's movies and analyzing them one at a time. I will judge them in three different categories: as a story and how well the overall plot line holds up. For comedic value, as Adam Sandler is know for comedy, so we will see how much we laugh ourselves to tears in this category. For our final category, we have quality actors, where we will let the other actors get a chance to shine. All of these categories will be rated out of a scale where one is the lowest and ten is the highest then given a overall score out of thirty. Our First week will be the movie Blended, one of Adam Sandler's newer movies which came out in 2014.
Let's just see how this movie blends together!
Let's just jump in with the story (warning: there will be spoilers). The show starts with recently divorced Lauren Reynolds (Drew Barrymore) is on a blind date with widowed Jim Friedman (Adam Sandler) at Hooters. They both really seem as if that they do not want to be there, so Jim fakes an excuse to leave. Fast forward, we get introduced to where these two work and their children. We first meet Jim working at Dick's Sporting Goods with a certain actor which will be mentioned later and his three daughters, Hillary, ESPN (yes, like the channel), and Lou they all are supremely Tom boyish even other boys think they are boys. While on the other hand we have Lauren working at Closet Queens, a closet organizing service, with her partner in crime Jen who we find out later is going out with Jim's boss . We also get to meet Lauren's two boys Tyler and Brenden. Tyler is hyper active and the other is over protective of his mother and has a huge crush on his babysitter. Basically one night Hillary gets a call from Mother Nature, so Jim has to run to the pharmacy and pick up some tampons.Where he meets Lauren again, she's buying a porno magazine because she ripped the secret center fold of Brenden's when she was cleaning his room at night. They both help each other out and the lady at the till messes up there cards.
So the next day Jim runs over to Lauren's house to switch the cards back and find out that Jim's boss was going to take Jen to Africa with his family where we later find out he was going to propose. Once Jim leaves the house, both him and Lauren try getting the tickets and wind up rooming together in Africa. Once we get to Africa the stories split. We have the blending story of Jim and Lauren, also we have them helping with each other kids problems respectively such as Lauren helping Hillary transforming into a woman instead of a 'dude' or Jim helping Tyler hit a ball and African shenanigans pursue . At the last night of the trip Jim recreates the night at hooters and they almost kiss but he says he can't. They get home and Jim finally decide to go to Lauren's house to talk. Where we meets Lauren ex and he lies and says him and Lauren are reconnecting so he could leave . While Lauren comes home and she tells him to be at the baseball game on Saturday if he really wants to be a dad. Well Saturday rolls around and guess who's not there, her ex. Jim finally appears to help Tyler bat a home run winning the game. After we find out that Jen married Jim's boss and Hillary is dating the guy she met in Africa. At the end of the game Jim and Lauren finally kiss and credits roll.
We laugh, we cry, it's time for the comedic values. In this category we are seeing if the humor stands up to today's era and if the average man can enjoy it. This movie actually has some hilarious moments from all types of humor. We have parenting humor, shock humor, low and high brow humor, there is even ridiculous humor. This movie has it all. But as usual in all Adam Sandler's movies there are some moments that just make you cringe at the humor. For example some of the jokes were ridiculously funny like having a half naked Terry Crews come out with with gang and start singing whatever pertaining to that moment now that's funny. While on the other hand we have the cringe humor, in one scene Hillary is trying to impress a boy while playing basketball with her dad and she try's dancing across the court and flaunting to him. That may be funny to some but not to me but overall Blended has a Great Humor that the average man can enjoy.
Now on to the final category we have quality actors. In this category we are looking at who is helping Sandler in his walk of fame through these movies, and how well they act in these roles. In Blended we have a star studded cast with the likes of Terry Crews, Joel McHale, Bella Thorne, and even Shaquille O'Neal makes a appearance They all played greatly in their roles. Terry Crews, which you might know from Brooklyn Nine-Nine plays the half naked man as mentioned above, and will appear whenever and sing with his gang whether its at weight lifting, a at dinner or welcoming guests. Joel McHale, who you might recognize him from the show Community, which is a favorite of mine, he plays Lauren's ex-husband and acts as the father that always seems to have something to do besides be with his kids, which is great for Joel and he pulls it off perfectly. Bella Thorne from Shake It Up plays as one of Sandler's daughters, Hillary, and she does a great job pulling it off all the way through from shy jock tom boy to a beautiful young lady. Finally, Shaquille O' Neal plays Doug, Jim's coworker that I've talked about earlier, Shaq in almost any movie is great even for a short time he'll make you laugh. They did a great job casting for this movie.
Time for the voting for. Story-wise, I would give it an eight and a half out of 10. The story got us connected with the families and understand their feelings but i always thought they could do more with it, and the story picks up as soon as they hit Africa which is approximately thirty minutes into it. Next, we have comedic values it gets eight out of 10. The jokes in this movie are great but some of them didn't stick and or were too cringeworthy to me, but it is the type of Adam Sandler humor we are used to. Lastly, we have acting quality which I give a 10 out of 10 because they really pulled the a-team together for this movie. Every actor made me smile in some way, great job production team. Blended gets a grand total of 26.5 out of 30, just enough for my books. I would strongly recommend you seeing this movie, as it's one of Sandler's best.
Tune in next week on Sandlerverse when we analyze Happy Gilmore.
