I'll admit it, I'm a drama queen. Everything is a HUGE deal and if something doesn't go my way, I get ticked and mope around. I'm what's wrong with our generation, but I bet if you really think about it, you might be too.
We're part of a generation of complainers. If something doesn't go our way, you bet your bottom dollar we're going to immediately Tweet about it, tell Facebook, or text our best friends about it, someone is going to know. But why? In hopes of sharing our anger, our disappointment?
Complaining is selfish and here's why:
1. It forces people to look at the negatives.
Maybe it is hotter than hell outside, but at least we live in a place where air conditioning is pretty easy to come by. Maybe the only parking spot is half a mile from work or class, but hey we have cars, right?
No one thinks about the silver lining when they hear a complaint. Our minds automatically jump to the bad, the sweaty back, or the long walk. Instead of appreciating what we do have, we start to complain, too. Complaining has a ripple effect.
2. It brings down the people around you.
Like I said, negativity has a ripple effect. It's selfish and unnecessary to pull others down. Easier said than done, I know. Misery loves company, cliché but true.
However, in the same way negative words spread negativity, positive words bring about more smiles and laughter from those you are surround yourself with. And let's be honest, sleepovers are a lot more fun when you're laughing and enjoying life than when you're bemoaning something silly.
3. It's not attractive. On anyone. Ever.
Being discontent is not a great way of scoring friends, no one wants to be around a person who is constantly whining. Don't get me wrong, sometimes you need to vent and that's fine, but don't make it a commonplace routine.
Think of a person in your life that makes you smile, someone that makes you laugh until your belly hurts, someone that you admire. Think about how they live their life, how they talk, how they present themselves in real life and on social media. I bet they don't fuss about every little thing, in fact I bet that's why you like them in the first place, because they spread cheer (just like Buddy the Elf).
So if you find yourself in a rut, try to find a way out. Is it raining? At least the grass will be green tomorrow. Didn't like the outcome of your last test? You have a brain in your head and the ability to push yourself. You didn't get the promotion you had hoped for? You still have a job.
You see my point here? There's always a silver lining, find it.
